help: my handi opens upon firing

new gun, first 2 shots remained closed, next 2 blew-open the action upon firing. the latch is not engaging more than 1/8" (smoked the latch & barrel catch).. I really want to file the barrel catch(shelf?) so more of the latch engages. Sure the gun is under warrranty but this really seems like a few careful strokes with a good file will fix problem. IDEAS ANYONE??  thanks, gary

This is so common that there are instructions to fix it on the site.  The action opens after the bullet has left the barrel, so things are good.  Follow the instructions, hold off with the file for a while, the latch will seat in more as it is shot.  Larry

Please do read the FAQ's...there are a-lot of fixes for these nuisance problems...and hold off with the file until you do

thanks, I will not file the shelf. seems like slamming the action shut might be needed until the gun wears-in. the headspace seems perfect. the shelf IS oily, and maybe a little polishing will help??

No...just remove the oil and keep it dry...These rifles work on a friction fit...and if the head space is correct oil will only change that..

Like Mac said, clean the oil off.  I had a Handi in .30-06 which I had Teflon finished.  That made the shelf slick enough that even dry it blew open.  I had to remove the coating there and it solved the problem.

with your help I figured out:  *after 2 shots(did not blow open) I cleaned & oiled the bore(break-in)
.. OILED BORE WITH TEFLON SUPER-SLICK, surely got some down on the latch since I clean bore from breech-end to save the crown /// betcha that is reason the next 2 shots(after cleaning) blew-open

I store mine muzzle down to keep the oil from the bore running out the chamber and on to the latch shelf, use a Q-tip and alcohol to clean the shelf after cleaning, just in case. ;)

Mine started popping open on my second trip to the range.  After reading the FAQs I started making sure the latch area was clean and dry and closed the gun with a little force.

Has never happened since.
