« on: February 11, 2009, 04:53:56 PM »

I am just starting to handload for the first time and am reading a lot.
Going to try lil gun and some hornady 45 gr  sp.
What would you set the col on this combo.
I mocked up one at 1.82 and it chambers fine. push it in with my finger and I feel nothing. how big is that chamber ?

35 grain Vmaxes with LIL gun have been a great recipe by many users here.

I like W296 with light bullets (35 grains and under) in the Hornet. I have 3 of them - a H&R SL, a Savage model 40 and a 10" T/C. I can get higher velocities with the W296 (H110) than with Lil'Gun with 35 grain and under bullets. I also get more consistent velocities with W296. I also use CCI small pistol primers, to get the higher velocities. I take my loads straight out of Speer reloading manual #14. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

Generally speaking your not going to be able to hit the rifling with any bullet meant for the hornet.

The hornet is usually a pretty good shooter, just load the manuals OAL and try it.

A favorite here is a case full of Lil'Gun (I couldn't even get the max load in the case) and a 35Gr Hornady Vmax. that is a short bullet and shoots very well for others. Mine is still in the box waiting for warmer weather to try it out.

OK advice taken
But I am going to stick with 45gr or bigger because this gun is used for deer and hogs.
Taken 19 so far with it using 45gr rem hp's. None took a step. But I want to reload for it, those little shells are high priced.
Ive been reading about using small pistol primers but one guy said the charge is the same betwwen small rifle and small pistol the only difference is the thickness of the cap and that you could push the firing pin through the cap ? comments ?

anybody download to .22lr velocities or lower

If you are shooting under 100 yards I have found that Lil Gun and 45 gr v-max will give around 1 inch groups. I use just under max loads. Where are you shooting the deer and hogs that they drop that fast?

P.S. I use the small rifle primers.

deer in the neck, hogs in the head or neck. Took one small hog to the shoulder it even dropped, had 3 exits, one spike neck shot had 3 exits as well.
wanna see some pics ?

Just got back from the range sighting in my new .17hmr.  sschaweeet !
50 yds I had 2 5 shot groups  in the .3 range.
I just finished some hornet loads some with 12.5 gr and some with 13 gr of lil gun behind a 45 gr hornady sp.
I used cci pistol primers, its all I can find right now.
If the wind dies I might go back to the range today.

You should be right on the money with that .22 Hornet load.

Super Mario, what kind of weak sickly deer are you putting out of their misery with this gun? Did someone forget to tell the critters that they won't die unless shot with  a magnum of .284 caliber or higher?  :)  as long as no one tells the deer this I bet they keep dying.

Super Mario, I beleaved you. I had an uncle when I was very young that fed his family on deer up north. He shot them in the head. All he ever onwed was a Hornet. Never know him to shoot them more than once.

Yep you got it. I am 42 now and I have come full circle, started with small calibers started going bigger and bigger then smaller and smaller, right back to where I started.

Heres a 205 lbr that fell to the hornet, 3 years ago.

My NEF Hornet has a very long chamber. 3 tips for your reloading, IMR 4227 is the powder which does best in mine, much better than Lil Gun. I use the Lee factory crimp die to crimp after loading, groups have shrunk.  I use small pistol primers exclusively.
