10/22 jamming
« on: August 19, 2007, 11:56:22 PM »
Hello everyone, I just bought a new 10/22 about a week ago and it wants to jam about once or twice with  each magazine full.
What is causing the jam is the spent case isn't getting out of the action and the bolt slams forward into the fired case which is sideways against the bolt face and the chamber end of the barrel. This makes me think that the bolt isn't cycling hard enough to eject the cases.
Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

What brand of ammo are you shooting? I have one that hates anything made by Winchester. CCI and Remington work great. Check the chamber to see if Ruger left a rough spot in it. There is a ton of info on Rimfire Central on 10/22,s.

Did you clean it real well before taking it out?  That 'preservative' (storage lube) that some companies use can really affect the functioning  of the rifle.

I replaced the stock extractor with a volquartsen exact edge extractor and haven't had a problem with any kind of ammo since.

Hello everyone thanks for the replies.
I have been very busy lately and haven't had time to shoot, but today I got the 10-22 out and did a little test. I have been shooting the Federal 550 round bulk pack ammo and so I bought a box of Federal 325 round bulk pack Auto-Match ammo to try.
I loaded 5 magazines full (50 rounds) of the Auto-Match and had zero malfunctions!
I then fired 50 rounds of the 550 round bulk pack ammo and had 7 malfunctions.
I told my wife I was going to have to get a few boxes of the auto-match ammo.

What ammo would you recommend for squirrel hunting in this 10-22?

Thanks again and GOOD SHOOTING!
