Handi Receiver

Hello all. I finally made it to my FFL to pick up the two receivers I bought on gunbroker. I used the newer one for my 243 bull barrel so now I have a complete set up for all my handi barrels. The other one is a little older according to the FAQ section. The serial # is HK437XXX. My question is this. If I read the H&R website correctly this can only be fitted with the barrels that do not have the * beside them. Am I correct? Thanks, Charlie

Yep you're right Charlie. Don't count that receiver out though. There are plenty of fine shooting Handi calibers to be had for it. 30-30, .357mag, or 45-70 would be my personal choices. There's always the .223, bull barrel would be a great choice for accuracy, the .22 Hornet, another venerable Handi caliber, though a bit expensive to shoot if ya don't handload, or there's the 44mag which make great 445 SuperMags.

Also Charlie, the new run of .44 Mag barrels are said to shoot factory and reloaded .44 Mag ammo a lot better than the overbored early barrels. Then new ones are reported to mic out at .430 and some close to .429. I am thinking of getting one myself. I am still unsure what the twist rate is in the new barrels but I think one is finally worth a shot....<><....:)

P.S. - you can never have to many receivers, a barrel will always come along!!! Also how do the .44 Mgas that have been rechambered to .445 Supermag shoot the .44's?

I've never shot a .44 mag round out of my 445 barrel, even before it was reamed.

Twist rate in the new 44mag barrels is 1 in 38.  I am very happy with the way mine shoots.

Twist rate of the 44mag has always been and is 1:38", the twist of the current production 444 Marlin is 1:20", old H&R Ultra 444 barrels were 1:38", same as the 44mag. There was hope that Marlin might change the 44mag to 1:20", but it didn't happen. :'(
