I was doing a little checking around today and found that there is an update version of Garmin’s Web Updater.  I had been using version 2.32, it has been updated by version 2.41.

Web Updater version for Legacy operation systems is version 2.4.0.  And the Mac version 2.0.1 was updated July of 2007.

You can find the downloads at this link:  http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27

The word has been out on the web that there was an update for the 60(x) and 76(x) series chipset.  But it was not reflected on the GPSMap 76Cx update page.  But it could be obtain by using the Web Updater.  My old Garmin Legend and 76C only have Garmin’s operating system software, but my new 76Cx has two sets of software, one which deals with Garmin’s programs and the other manages the chipset.  On today’s date(12/02/07) the Garmin software update page shows the latest version for the 76c Chipset Type G as 2.90.  But if you use Web Updater version 2.41 you will get Chipset Type G version 3.00 what is suppose to resolve some problems.

Getting late but a while back I posted that I was having a shut down problem with my 76Cx.  And Garmin support gave me a link to download a fix.  One of these downloads is suppose to fix the shut down problem plus improve other features.

The 60Cx, 60CSx, 76Cx, and the 76CSx share the same chipset, I recommend that if you have not downloaded Web Updater version 2.41 that you do so.  I created a file in My Documents and downloaded it to the file.  I then double clicked on the download and selected run.  I then closed the folder and went to Start, Programs, and Garmin.  I clicked on Garmin and selected Web Updater.  With my gps connected and on I then clicked on Web Updater and obtained the updates.

I thought my 76C was up to date, but surprise the Web Updater found a update for it.  The 76C shares operation systems with the 76CS, 60C and 60CS.

It is worth the time to keep your unit software and Map Source Up to Date.  I also store different versions of Garmin Downloads because every once and a while there will be a problem with the download.

Longwinters:  I believe that part of the update had to do with almanac data.  I realize that some of the almanac data is received from the satellites and is updated at the time the gps is Initialized the first time and when in use there after.    The data in the unit allows it to search for signal of the appropriate satellites when it is turned on.  And speeds up satellite lockup.

A Michigan fisherman who packs his gps in his suitcase for the trip to Florida will have to Initialize his gps again in Florida.  When I drove to Eastern Montana from California I kept my gps fired up during the day, and it always maintained contact with the satellites and it locked quickly in the morning because the almanac generated a list of visible satellites.  A gps shipped from Garmin in Kansas when turned on 600 miles away takes a while for the unit to find itself.

The type data that maybe found in an update.  This example does not show 3.00.
