Darrell's Scout Mounts
« on: June 23, 2005, 03:28:02 PM »
Well got Darrell's Scout mount in the mail today. Had to mount it on my K31 as soon as I could get it out of the cabinet. I tell you guys this is great mount and if you have a K31 or a Mosin Nagant you want to scout mount this mount is well worth the money. Makes the BSquare ones look pale in comparison. Jim

My Family of growing scout rifles. :)

Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

jh, you have a nice set of shooters.  Although its had the stock and barrel bobed, I really like the Swede.   I have been thinking of scoping a mod 96 or 38 with the scout mount in order to capitalize on their excellent accuracy. They have all matching #s so I figured that was my only option.  I plan to order the alumnium weaver block from Brownells and try to make my own.  Nice pictures too.

Hello...

Regarding the Mosin in your picture, what type of scope do you have mounted?  Is it a long eye-relief scope or a regular rifle scope?  How do you find the eye relief?

I might be interested in buying one of these mounts for a sporterized Mosin I bought last weekend.  What do they run in terms of the price?

Thanks much,
Gary

Gary the pistol scope is a old Bushnell Phantom which were popular back in the late 50's and 60's not the best scope these days as they have a narrow FOV but until I find other pistol scopes they will do the job. Both the K31 and the Mosin have them. I bought one at a gun show for 27 bucks and the other was given to me. The Swede Mauser has a Tasco iluminated pistol scope and it is a lot better scope. I have found most any pistol scope works well as a scout scope. Some have found shotgun scopes work too. But on those it would depend on the distance of the mount and the eye relief of the shotgun scope. With Pistol scopes I know they are long enough eye relief.  as far as mounts go get One of Darrells mounts for you Mosin it is a lot better mount than the Bsquare mounts are. Might cost a few more bucks but worth it. Go to Parralax's  curio and relic web sight and click Darrels Scout mounts and you will get the info you need. Jim

Hello...

Yeah, those look like real nice scope mounts.  I like the sturdiness of the mounts, and the brass set-screw feature.  I have a B-Square mount on a Swede M38 Husquvarna.  I have a Tasco scope that I bought inexpensively that has proved to work good, unlike some I have heard about.  For a cheap scope, it has pretty good optics and is plenty accurate.

I have a sporterized Mosin Izshy (bought it for $40) that I might consider for Darrell's mount.  However, the rifle is proving plenty accurate with the irons, and I may leave it the way it is for awhile.  It is fun shooting it out in the middle of nowhere at rocks that are several hundred yards away.

I also have a sporterized SMLE that I might consider for a scope at some point.  That one I bought for $20!

Cheers,
Gary

Might want to pick up one of Darrell's mounts just to have on hand in case you get a other gun or change your mind. Hard to say how long he will make them as he is a one man shop or if something would happen that he could not make them anymore. You never know. Jim

50 to 60 bucks the one for the K31 goes for 60 bucks. Considering that Bsquare ones at Cabela's are now selling for 64 bucks these are a bargain as they are a lot nicer mounts. Jim
