Carrying Your Encore?
« on: September 10, 2007, 11:37:43 AM »
Thinking about carrying a 14" Encore along with a shotgun on predator hunting stands, are any of you doing this and what are the ways to carry the Encore, holster, packpack, etc. It is nice to have both
a shotgun and 200 yard capable firearm with you.
Anybody first hand experience out there?

thanks....

Not Encore, but I've carried a Contender on many prarie dog hunts that required a long hike to get in position for some 100 to 150 yd shooting.  I use the ballistic holster for the 14" scoped barrel. It's the bandoleer style and with the belt loup some of the weight is taken off the shoulder, making it an easy carry for long treks.  I have 3 rigs for different configurations and bought them all used for considerably less than new, in fact all 3 probably cost less than 1 new.  They are much less demanding of care than the leather equals and actually cheaper.

Been through a bunch of holsters for the scoped long barrel specialty handguns over the years, commercial and custom made.   Hip, cross draw, shoulder and bandoleer for Contenders, Encores, XP-100's, a Sako A1 and long barreled revolvers.   I settled on a sling system instead and it has worked out much better than any of the holsters did.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Like Larry, I've tried all the holster systems and none of them did much for me.  My Contenders, XP-100, Encore, and even my long barrelled single six rides on a sling and has for many years.  I use a sling with a quick adjust buckle that allows a quick and quiet adjustment from shorter carry length to longer shooting length.  Once you get used to using it, the sling adds a great deal of stability to many of my shooting positions. I have a 15 in. barreled Encore with a 27 in. by-pod on it  that I hunt deer with and I have use a sling to carry it. There is no way to shoot it accurately off hand so a quick shot is out anyway. So why not make it easy.

I too have tried all kinds of holsters and found the sling works best for me

I use nothing fancy just a 1" nylon strap and a slide buckle I get everything from a camping supply center for around $3.00 then add my own swivels
