Remington 700 Tactical
« on: July 21, 2007, 02:08:22 PM »
Was checking out the 700 tactical on remingtons web site. Its the one with a 20'heavy barrel and comes in 223 and 308.Anybody have either one?I've been drooling over it,afraid to go look at one as it would come home with me. :o Heck one of each, what a matched pair that would be.Guess I could sell one of my extras and then go look ;D ;D

Are you speaking of the SPS Tactical or the XCR tactical? 2 totally different beasts.

**Edit: I just re-read your post and saw you mention the 20" barrel, so it's the SPS model. Ignore everything below! That's what I get for skimming 2 fast!!

If you're talking about the XCR, it's not available yet and I really really really wish it was...

The XCR can be found under the "Tactical" section of centerfire rifles on their website.

I haven't seen anyone around here mention they want the SPS version, maybe that will change and they can get in here with a range report  :)

If the XCR is 2 much, get a 700P(Police), they can be had for 800.00 or less at times and are excellent tactical rifles as I'm sure you know.

I know what you mean sniperVLS,I've skimmed a post and answered then reread and think uh-oh.Yeah that 700P looks good too.The 20 inch barrel on the SPS is what caught my attention, just happens to be what I like!I know most want the longer barrels, but I'm a smaller fellow and the 20' just works and balances best for me,and is more suited to the way I would use it.Hope someone has one and will give a report.

You might be the first to have one, leaving you the job of filling all your Remington brethren in on it's performance  ;D

Bought it  this summer. Cost about $560. It shot really good groups (about5/8@100 from the beginning with Fed 168gn match and 155gn HPBT reloads. The stock forearm is flexible. I think  a good but if you must have the 20" barrel or get a SPS Varmint for less and replace the stock. For shooting .223 heavy bullets, this rifle is the only way to go for under$800 because of the 1/9 twist barrel.

Thanks for the info rich, now do you think the stock is so fexible that using a bipod may change point of impact?I ask cause I use bipods most of my groundhog hunts.

I have the 243 Varmint SPS and I also use a bipod. It does not seem to affect the POI. at all.  Dale

Yes, this is a keeper for me. I am currently having a custom tactical rig built and I have some pretty high expectations of it based on this setup.

I don't know this might be some crazy thinking but I am going to throw it out there anyways. Most people here know how happy I have been with my 700 SPS 243 Varmint. I even shot a 300 yard group with 2 bullets touching and the 3rd opened it up to 3/4''. This is what I was kind of thinking. If you were straped for cash and could not really afford the Tactical. You could buy the SPS (which also has the heavy barrel) They come in the 17 REM Fireball  204 Ruger  223 Rem  22-250  243  and the 308. You could buy one of those and have your smith cut the barrel down to 20''. He could then recrown it with a target crown and I bet you would have a fine shooting rifle for a fraction of the cost. I just threw it out there. Just a thought. I bet the smith would do it for under $100.00.  Dale
