460 Katahdin - What scope?
« on: September 07, 2007, 05:29:39 AM »
I need your help guys.  What scope would you recommend for this particular barrel?  What brand, fixed/variable?  I'm not exactly sure how I'll use this, but maybe a brush gun for pigs and deer.

Any and all input is welcome.

Thanks,

Heavy C

you should have asked me sooner  ;D

You'll need a scope with lots of eye relief that can handle lots of recoil. I think a quality red dot or reflex sight is a better option for your new barrel.

I had an Accu-Dot Pan av on it for awhile and it worked quite well, when I installed a Bushnell banner 3x9x40 shotgun scope it took only 10 rounds to kill not only the scope but one of the rings as well :o

trust me Reflex or red dot for full house 460 loads

...............On any heavy recoil gun I'd go with a Leupold 1.5x5 VXIII for the eye relief and wide field of view and proven durability ....good base and lapped steel rings and you should be ready for the thumpin from lobbing a large chunk of lead.....good luck and good shooting!!

DUH!  Sometimes I can be a real bone head!  I did think about a red dot, but I did want some low level magnification.  So what's the recoil like?  Is it anywhere close to a 30-06?

The Leupold was a good suggestion, but I don't know that I can swing that price right now.

BTW Krochus I can't wait to get those axle shafts on Monday!   ;D

Thanks for the input guys!

let me put it this way, With a 300grn XTP movin out at 2200 FPS the recoil of a 30-06 is nowhere close to the recoil of full house 460 loads. l liken it more to a 3.5" 12ga shell in a light shotgun.

Of course it goes without saying that the .45LC loads are real pussycats.

Sounds like fun.  Have you had any experience with UltraDots?  I saw where the make a rifle scope with different levels of magnification.

OOPS sorry I must correct myself.

I had a Ultra-Dot pan AV reflex sight on the katadin. It worked great and seemed to be unaffected by the substantial recoil. I have no experience with their scopes, so I don't know what they offer in terms of eye relief.

Stuck back in a drawer somewhere around here I have an old and I reckon now discontinued Leupold 3X scope. I don't really even recall how I came by it. But to me such a scope would be about ideal for such a barrel. It will likely wind up on a lever gun eventually just which of them I'll put it on I dunno as I have several of them. The finish on the tube is a bit rough and it would be a good candidate for a camo job which it also might get. The Leupold 1-4 or 1.5-5 are also fine choices for such a barrel.

Thanks GB.  Like I mentioned the Leupold's are a little out of my price range right now, but it might just take a little more shopping around on my part.  Prior to my TC addiction I used to be Leupold all the way, but the prospect of one for each barrel was impossible.  The recoil Krochus describes sounds like it will require something like a Leupold or Burris.

Krochus where did you buy your Ultra Dot?  I'm also looking to put a red dot on my 44 mag barrel.

You might consider the Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 Shotgun scope, it has almost 4" of eye relief and is made for slug gun/turkey gun recoil. I have the camo version on a 500S&W Handirifle mounted in Leupold PRW rings, works very well with hot loads so far, 350gr @ 2150fps and 700gr @ 1430fps, the parallax setting is 75yds, but I don't think that will hurt hunting accuracy, price is right at $130 too.

Hmmm...Nikon.  Hadn't thought about them.  I also just read the review someone posted on the Mueller scope that is also 2 - 7x.

If the Nikon can hang with a 500; then surely it will take the 460.  Decisions, decisions.

The Mueller 2-7x32 is a great little scope, but the eye relief is a little short at 3¼", specially with the muzzle jump of that 460 that krochus mentioned in his range report. 4" may even be a problem. If you can spend another $120, the Nikon Omega has 5" of eye relief.

Still within my price range, but too much magnification.

Thanks for your help Tim.  That looks like it might be the one.

BTW what barrel length is that 500 of yours?

I bought my Ultradot from a gentleman at a gunshow here locally. I paid $60 for it used.

22", but the stock design may have as much to do with the muzzle jump as the shorter 20" barrel of the 460 TC. ;) Either way, I would be aware of Krochus' advice about eye relief, just in case, a scope in the eye brow is no fun. ;)

Thanks Krochus.

I hear you loud and clear Tim.  I experienced that as a youngster with my Dad's 308 - not too fun at all.  I also have one of the new Flextech stocks on the way that should help too.  I'm really looking forward to getting this rig set up!   ;D

I've got the t-hole flex tech stock on my 375H&H Encore with a 4-12 VX-1 Leupold mounted on it for load work, I filled the stock cavity with lead shot to make it more bench friendly, it works very well, something you might consider with the 460 if you have any shot. ;)

Gentlemen:

Thanks for all of the input.  I ordered the Leupold 1 - 4 x shotgun/muzzle loader scope from SWFA.  It ships today and I got a free gift to boot - a free eye guard!  It's almost as if they new what I was in for with this 460.   :o  ;D

Thanks again,

Heavy C
