Shooting Sticks

When using sticks in the field, what do you brace in Vee, the barrel, the frame or I've even heard of guys bracing their wrist. What is recommended? I'm shooting a 7.5 inch standard Red hawk in
41 Rem Mag.

I shoot accurate rifles and know to have my barrels freefloated and only the stock touching the rest in the same spot every time. This is necessary for <.1 groups at 100 yds. But I shoot my Super Redhawk with the barrel in the V on my shooting sticks while hunting. I feel if I give up any accuracy, I make up for it a stable rest. Nothing beats going afield and practing to see what works best.

I rest the frame or my hand/wrist. Resting the barrel of a rifle on anything is known to cause erratic shot placement. I can't believe that it would be much different with a handgun.

I'd try both ways at the range to see if accuracy changes and, more importantly, does point of impact change. My guess is that if the gun is properly sighted in and then subsequently shot from a barrel rested position that accuracy and POI will both be affected.

I use a monopod/walking stick as a rest and have tested it at the range with both my contender and DW 357max and found no significant difference resting the barrel, forearm(contender) or the frame in front of the trigger. The worst groups were resting my wrist on the sticks as had been suggested by an expert.  Go to the range with your sticks and see what works for you.  A comfortable stable rest that you can hold for the best angle is considerably more important to accuracy than what is resting on the sticks.

I do the same, that is where most people find the best support.

 I never but the barrel on any rest and the wrist is to unstable to give good accuracy.

I use a walking stick as my shooting rest. I shoot right handed. I have my best success resting my right wrist on my left arm, to the left of my stick. I think you just have to try and see what works best for you.

this has been helpful to me as I am going to some sort of stick or sticks for a rest when going to/from  my stand..

I use a single stick because I don't like to carry more than I have to?

i use to shoot off bags at the range,then i got rid if the bags and accuracy suffered for awhile. currently ,
i only use a rest for my 454.

in the field i carry a single pole,but this year i aimed both ways and i liked free hand instead of the stick.
just seemed easier to aim without the V. however, this year i think i will take the rest to the range and try both ways. maybe more practice with the stick will make it seem more natural to use it next year.
