Encore caliber
« on: September 05, 2007, 03:22:04 PM »
Can someone help me? I recently purchased a new Gary Reeder  Ultimate Encore in His 356 GNR cartridge. I now understand this will not work for my intended purpose.
See I live in Michigans shotgun zone. It is legal to hunt deer with a handgun, but only with a .35 caliber or larger with a straight walled cartridge. Could anyone give me advice on a commercially available cartridge which meets this criteria. I do not currently reload and am new to this whole handgun thing, I have looked at the 45/70 and the .460 SW , I"m looking to reach out to 200 yards without killing me. What do you think of the .460? What length barrel? from where? Muzzlebrake?
Thanks

The cartridges you need to consider are the 357 Remington Maximum, the 444 Marlin, the 460 S&W Magnum, the 45/70 Government and the 500 S&W Magnum.  The flattest shooting of the bunch is the 460 S&W Magnum.  You'll be happiest with a braked barrel except with the 357 Remington Maximum which will have the least recoil of all and probably doesn't need a brake.  Many would consider the recoil of the 460 S&W, 45/70 & 500 S&W abusive.  I've had good success with T/C factory barrels but I reload.  Unless you reload and like to fiddle, you probably won't get acceptable (by acceptable I mean up to 2 MOA) 200 yard accuracy from the 460 S&W with factory ammo with a T/C barrel.  My personal preference for these cartridges is a barrel of 14 to 15 inches long including brake.  The 357 Maximum would shoot well with a 10 inch barrel.

One must have personal good shooting skills to make successful 200 yard shots with a handgun.  The gun must also be top notch.  Especially with the heavy recoiling rounds, don't scrimp on the scope or the mounts.  If you get a cheap scope, it will probably never give you the accuracy you want even though it doesn't break.  If the mounts aren't good, they will bend or loosen.  I would recommend a 2.5-8X Leupold Vari X III in SSK Industries T'SOB base with 4 rings.  If you buy their base, SSK Industries will even mount your scope for you and they sell scopes as well.

I broke 2 scopes and had never ending mount problems with my 500 S&W barrel and didn't get the accuracy I wanted until I went with a Leupold scope and the T'SOB base.  The gun will now put 3 bullets into 1.5 inches or less off the bench at 100 yards.

you forgot the 454 casual.

the 44 magnum 41 magnum, hot loads for the 45 colt will all work out to around 100 yards. 200 yards is a long way to shoot

Yea, I did forget the 454 Casull since you'd be better off with the 460 S&W Magnum but still, my mistake.

Also, though the 357 Maximum is a standard factory chambering, the choices of factory ammo are paltry so it's best reloaded for.

If you are looking for a handgun load that will shoot "flat out" to 200yds, that is without "holding the gun high," you are going to have a good amount of recoil, and if it is a "braked" barrel you are also going to need to get some hearing protection when you fire. Ya, even when hunting, you will hear that one go off.
Now if you were after flat shooting to 150yds, the options would be plentiful and so would the availability of factory ammo.
A .357mag in a 12" Encore is a very underrated and formidable round. The .44mag, even more so. Either of these cartridges in a 12" barrel can yield up to 1600fps with factory ammo. Plenty fast for 150yd shooting. 200yds? Ya just aim a little higher. Practice makes perfect.

Why not a 38/55?

Grumulkin nailed the list, and he's correct on using a brake.  Failure to do so will make the pistol hard to shoot enough to sufficiently practice.  Just make sure that you use eye and ear protection.  Those hand cannons with a brake can suck your brains out through your ear canal, or so it seems.  :)

I have a similar stipulation where I hunt.  I bought a .454 Casull barrel for my Encore.  I can shoot milk jugs at 200 yds with it from a good rest and I use a 4x Leupold scope.  I just purchased a 2.5-7x Burris for it for higher magnification, I hope it holds up.  Anyway, I have yet to shoot a deer with it past 50 yds, but it's nice to know I can from a good rest.

don't forget the 375 winchester maybe pushing it at 200 yards but very capable of 150. and not abusive to shoot. also the 445 super mag but would probly have to reload to make that an option. just my .02

I think the 375 Winchester is an excellent choice given your situation and I second the previous suggestion.

I also think 200 yards out of a straightwall with factory barrels and ammo is probably unrealistic. You could get lucky and score a hummer of a barrel that just loves factory ammo but that is unlikely. Also you are also going to have to practice quite a bit and to become proficient with any of the calibers mentioned thus far it is going to cost you a lot more than a reloading setup.
