45/70 Ammo Question
« on: September 16, 2007, 10:53:20 AM »
Hello all,

Just recently bought a 1895 Guide Gun in the 18.5" barrel. At the time of purchase I also bought two boxes of Hornady 325 gr. Lever Evolutions for use on western black bear, blacktail deer and elk here in Washington.  Is this a good load and bullet to use based on the game, do I want more/less or is this appropriate.  I will be using this gun around the tight brush areas so probably nothing over 50-100 yards...I've got an '06 to handle the open areas.  What is your all take on it?

At those ranges, the .45-70 is the bomb, with pretty much anything that'll fit in the chamber.

My guess is it may be a bit too much, as from what I've read, it can make a mess at close ranges.  Worth one maybe to find out.
