Dove season almost on us
« on: August 15, 2007, 05:00:40 AM »
I don't know how many avid dove gunners there are in here.........but this year is setting up to be a great one......in the areas where corn was a bit behind ....the hot hot dry weather has made it catch up a bit......I dont know if they will be shellin corn by labor day.....but I am thinking they will.......in SE MO , where irrigation is everywhere....the water left at the low end of the field...is like a magnet for doves......yo ucan't say it is "bait"....since the farmers crops are that way for them to make a living..not as a "attractant crop".     I have flushed literally thousands of doves from row crop rice, cotton, and beans all being irrigated.   If you water it....they will come....

I am going to hunt either between Sikeston and Morehouse with a friend who has some land.

I will either head south of Sikeston to a friend land that has a pond and corn and sunflowers that have already been combined.....or out to a good friends north of the rodeo grounds..........hoping we get enough rain , to make a puddle or two before Saturday .....keep the birds near the fields , keep em moving

Well,
openeing weekend for me , pretty much was limited to about an hour Sat am........then about an hour Monday afternoon late......killeda few birds....maybe enough to fill a ka-bob..........what I notice is.....alot of small birds....fledglings.......look like they hatched about 6 weeks ago ..........incredibly small......then , every once in awhile, a larger, more mature bird flies through ........did not pop a single European dove.....but did see a few .....that others had hit......went yesterday afternoon.....and got ten...so they 'll be consumed this week....here's a good recipe......pull the meat off the breastbone.....soak in Italian dressing.....overnight....then put on the grill...for about 6 minutes...3 on one side, 3 on the other......mine have really turned out well when I have made them that way .......just an fyi....
