New Optima Elite 308
« on: September 07, 2007, 12:53:29 PM »
Received my new 308 the other day.  Still waiting for a durasight scope rail to come in.  Couldn't wait to shoot it, so I did with the factory open sights this morning.  A shooter it is!!!  With Gold Medal Match ammo, a five shot group appx. 1.5" at 100 yards.  The only problem with this is that the group is about 10" high with the rear sight at the lowest it will go on the rifle.  Didn't have a chance to get ahold of CVA, but does anyone know if the front sight heights are different from "full contour" barrels to the "standard" contour?
Someone was talking recoil in another thread.  Mine was very minimal and mostly straight back.   Sights back on target almost instantly after the shot.

That's darn good shootin for open sights, at least it is for my old eyes!! Congrats and welcome to GBO!! Yours having sights is a surprise, I thought only the muzzleloader barrels had sights, I've got two CF barrels for mine, 7mm-08 and 300Win Mag, both are slick as are both of nomosendero's barrels. Best call or email Mark at CVA about the rear sight issue, it could have the wrong front sight on it too, perhaps the CF and muzzleloaders have different sights and they switched em. See the CS sticky at the top of this forum, CVA's phone number is 770-449-4687.

Welcome Aboard..

I know what you mean about the Federal Gold Match ammo...mine really does well with it too...The guys in CS at CVA/BPI will help you...give them a call Monday and let them know how high it's shooting...they will want to know how tall the one you have is...so have the measurement handy if you call... My 270 barrel does not have sights either not drilled or tapped. Hmmmm However that was some good shooting for open sights.

I talked with the folks at CVA yesterday and explained the shooting high situation to them.  The only questions they asked for were my mailing address to which they were promptly sending a new set of sights.  The customer rep also pointed me in the direction of a product specialist at Williams if the new sights (factory) are still running high and get a taller front sight.  My hat is off to the folks at CVA for the product and for working to resolve issues ASAP.

Shot again over the weekend still breaking in the barrel and running 5 shot groups 1.75 to 2.25 inches with GM ammo.  Antelope in October and Deer in November Here I come.

A couple mentioned their barrels were slick barrels.  I asked CVA about this and they did produce barrels with sights back in 2006.  Evidently the supplier my gun shop goes though had some older ones still on the shelf.  OH well, I'm still very pleased with my rifle.
