Constantly Sharpening
« on: September 14, 2007, 02:52:58 PM »
I dont know why but whenever I see a small shiny spot no matter how small on my knife edges I just have to sharpen it. It seems like I always sharpen a knife after I use it no matter how much. They are always sharp enough to shave hair with, i just cant stop myself from resharpening it. It bothers me knowing that the entire blade isn't sticky sharp.  No burs on my babies just finely honed steel! I wore out my Smith Diamond Steel. Am I the only one with this affliction?
BTW I find it relaxing to sharpen them...I dont think Im crazy...

I too like a perfectly sharpened knife. I will keep at it until I get it where I want it. But once its there, I don't touch it again until its again dull. There are a couple knives I keep multiples of because I don't want to stop to sharpen them.

One is my BUCK skinners, I keep two ready for deer season. they get used then sharpened and oiled and set aside for the next animal.

The second are my fillet knives, I keep a BUNCH of those in a roll up ready to go. These dull quickly with the big saltwater fish I usually catch. that's what I keep so many, i never want to sharpen them while out on the water. Its just a recipe for a bad situation.

MOST every time I get in this predicament its because the angle is wrong or not to my liking. Once the correct angle is achieved, it only takes a couple strokes to get it back shaving sharp.

You guys need to pick up a set of those Edge Maker sharpeners discussed on this site about what do you like for sharpeners. The yellow one in this set if just perfect for us real picky about sharp edge folks. When you use a good sharp knife, just a couple pulls with not much more that the weight of the knife will restore that scary sharp edge we like. Almost zero steel is ever removed from the blade. For fillet knives its a dreamers best dream and for all other NOT TO Thick knives it works just as well. If you have not tried one of these you are missing out on a great product. I think the whole set of Three sells for about twenty bucks.
shot placement is everything.

I have tried many things to sharpen my knives.

The only new fanged item that has proved itself to me is the ceramic stick.

I have a couple really good stones on med and hard that get my blades back to shaving sharp in a couple strokes. (Once the correct angles have been attained) As long as they are not allowed to get too dull. Even then, its just a softer stone for a couple swipes than back to the hard stone and I am done.

BUT, I am willing to look. Can you post a link to this item so I/we can see?

 Thanks,

This is not new fangled, I have been using this sharpener for about 15 years. I won't be caught without these on a outing of any kind. ;D Every knife that comes through my door gets about six licks through the kellow hone and its shaving time. ;)
shot placement is everything.

Try stropping before you re-sharpen. That way you will not remove steel. Stropping will straighten a "curled" edge but if the knife is truly dull, resharpening is required/

Your correct on the stropping, I just choose to use a hard ceramic stick for this step. ;D

For general use..hunting or pocket knife, I generally just take the edge as far as needed to perform the job efficently.

Generally, that means to the medium side of my Norton India stone.

When I try to maintain a lot keener edge than needed, I find that the edge turns more easily..causing me to be continually

  doing a " touch-up "..

Just how it works for me..may not for others..
