Handi recoil

Just hoping to get a little info from all of you on the Handi, regarding recoil.

The only Handi I have (also the only I have shot) is a 223 with heavy barrel.  I was pretty shocked one day when I was shooting it at between 300-400 yards, into a freshly plowed dirt hill. Was shooting at dark or light spots on the hillside.  The muzzle jumped enough to where I could not see the bullet impact, but could get back on target quick enough to see the dust before it diisappeared.

I know that a lot of recoil is "perceived".  My perception is, for a 223, the recoil is quite a bit.  I am not recoil sensative.  I shoot my 50 caliber ML with some STIFF loads.  Have shot multiple times in a row with 460 gr conical on top of 120 gr of 777 and also shot some 620 gr conicals on top of 100 gr of 777.  Also shoot a 338 mag and a 30-06 with steel buttplate.

So, I am not saying this 223 kicks hard, but just seems like too much for what it is.  My guess is, it is the stock design that causes the muzzle jump.  Wouldn't this be easily fixed by a slightly different stock design?  How do the larger caliber handis kick?

The stock wieght and design has a lot to do with recoil and muzzle jump.
If your recoil pad was in line with the bore it would not rise at all, but you would need 4" rings to see through your scope.

Try adding some weight to your stock and if you can put it high in the stock.
When my 223 had the wood stock and it was full of BBs it barely even moved whenit went off.
Now I have a synthetic stock and fore end. It still doesn't kick much but I do loose my target when I shoot.

That's one of the reasons why the 204 Ruger is real popular for seeing impacts on varmints, it has enough less recoil than the 223 to make it possible, shooting paper, the holes just appear in the target, where the 223 even with 45gr bullets can cause momentary loss of sight of the target. I think the drop of the stock and basic design has a lot to do with the amount of muzzle lift. I do know that shooting hot loads in the .500S&W with an Ultra stock set on it doesn't have as much muzzle lift as the 45 Colt Carbine does which has more drop in the stock, but has far less recoil, but a much lighter barrel, too. You can see it well with a sxs comparison, although the top rifle is a .444, the stock is the same on the .500.

Tim, NOW you tell me I should have got a 204.       Actually, when I got the 223, it was because of ammo availability.  Not one of my best moves.

I can see all the impacts on groundhogs with my 223 Ultra Varmint with 50 grain v-max's and a near max load of h322, but the big 6x24 scope and bipods are probally the reason that i can still see impact.

PM, I am not going to add any weight.  It already weighs a TON.  I do carry it when I hike in after coyotes.

I really noticed just what you are talking about while I was at the PD shoot this yr and one of the main reasons I shot the 204 much more than the 223 you could stay on target and actually see them POP from the 204 I think this yr I will work with some lead shot and a different forearm on the 223 so I can watch all of them POP Kurt
