Marlin model 30AS-Problem stepchild
« on: September 18, 2007, 10:59:22 PM »
Yes its a Marlin and yes it works and shoots fine. The trouble is not much in the way of aftermarket sights, furniture, etc. will fit.  Dovetail front sight without the 336 ramp makes finding a set of fiber optics difficult, if not impossible.  Having the steel cap in place of a forearm band precludes installing any forearm that is made for the widely available 336.  Its beginning to look as if any plans I had for a lever action will be negated until the time comes I can find a 336 in similar condition to trade for. Its a shame to part with a rifle that's in 95% condition but as things stand its not what I wanted.   Rant off!

My guess is you will have no trouble selling your rifle if it is in the shape you say.  Lots of folks will want it just as it is.

My Marlin is a 30AW, and it looks just like a 336 with all parts interchangeable (that I can find so far).  Funny that a letter suffex makes such a difference.  I have even seen AWs sell for more than 336s depending on condition.

Good luck with your project and sorry about the problems.

Sorry for sounding like such a whiner.  The rifle, after all, IS a good one as it is. BUT, I'm one of those types that always want something different than the way the factory presented it.  I originally wanted a scope with QR rings, a set of regular sights (no peeps) with fiber optic pipes and a set of plastic furniture.  I find my sights sit too low to clear the Weaver scope base, have been unable to locate Fi-OP sights that sit higher and the plastic forearm from a 336 set won't work with the steel cap. Selling my rifle,as you say, won't be too difficult with deer season approaching, this also creates the problem of finding a 336 in about the same condition, people tend to hang onto them until December or January.

If you have the room on the barrel get a Williams shorty ramp and a threaded dove tail adapter from midway   that should give you the height you need for that fiber sight. Ypu can order the same type of forend ca that has a swivel (QD) stud in it from Marlin  Gun parts Corp or brownell  .. Fear not all is not lost If need be tell me waht your looking for I try to find it and tell you where you can order it

Williams Gun Sight Co makes the proper fiber-optic front sight, for a direct barrel fit, for your rifle - in several heights.

Get the "W", which has a base dovetail width of .521" to fit the wide barrel dovetails -and heights in several steps from .375" to .570".

When you call Williams, also ask about their WGOS - Williams Guide Open Sight - with the #62019 fiber-optic option.  You'll be needing the sight model like the one for the Ruger 10/22, which has a barrel dovetail adaptor included. The WGOS should be high enough to meet your requirements.

BTW - Does your Weaver-style scope mount base(s) have the center section made lower than the side rails, to facilitate open sight viewing ?  If not, shop around for another mount that does have that feature.

Thanks!  I called Williams, guy told me what I needed to AT LEAST get a set of Fiber Optics on.  Placed order for a set.  Yes, the scope base is lower in the center, I may just have to forget using the scope and changing the furniture and just keep it as is, for now.  I suppose I'll survive.  I can get through this deer season, then after season try to find a 336 so I can modify it as I'd like.  I can't complain too much, I got the rifle, sling already mounted, scope base, all for $200.  From arms length it looks like a new rifle. OOOPS! Almost forgot, I'll need to cut a notch under the bottom front of the sight to allow for clearing the barrel band.  Life just ain't simple.
