changing ejector to extractor on H&R ultra
« on: September 17, 2007, 02:46:45 AM »
Fellows, I don't post here often, but I have a question about my son's ultra.  He's had the gun for a year and a half, and took it to Idaho for black bear last fall.  The gun is reasonably accurate with factory loads[it's a 30-06].  The issue we have had is that 1-2 rounds out of 20 fail to eject.  I've polished the chamber, dried it, etc.  Had chamber reamed.  If I change the ejector to extractor, do they work 100% of the time?  My son and I are going to south africa for a plains game hunt, next July.  We have seriously considered getting rid of the rifle.  However, my son has grown up on hammer single shots, and I am not sure getting him another action to get used to is the answer.  Not sure I want to try the BB behind the spring thingy, and don't want him to have to carry a cleaning rod to knock out a stuck case.  Can an extractor be ordered from the factory, and will it solve the problem?  Thanks.

The answer is ...no...It won't make it 100% reliable...you still will have a weak ejector spring that has to be used...and ruining a good ejector barrel...well...I wouldn't...The BB trick behind the spring usually always works...but...if you are wanting a 100% extraction rate...send the frame in for a extractor barrel...and try the BB on your ejector barrel and see how it does...If your not happy with it...you can sell it or trade it in the H&R classified pretty easy...Check out this thread...http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,126194.0.html...same caliber barrel...same problem...

The BB trick worked!  Took the gun to the range, and fired 22 shots over a period of 35 minutes, and every case ejected perfectly!  Looks like the Ultra is going to Africa, with my son, for the plains game hunt.  The critters he will be hunting include, kudu, gemsbok, zebra, impala, warthog, and blessbok.  The 30-06 with 180 gr. nosler part. should handle it all.  Woner how many other handis have been to Africa for plains game?
