Does anyone know what medicines are used to treat arthritis  in dogs?

I found the URL below by just typing in "arthritis in dogs".
There is a lot of information out there and I need something for my lab too.  Somehow running him over with the jeep and getting hit by a car has given him a touch of arthritis. And, a greater respect for cars!

I've had a few dogs with arthritis and the Vet's had me put them on Rimadyl (not sure of the spelling). I've also used buffered aspirin in mild cases.There's a new drug out too that cheaper than Rimadyl. The vet said my 6 year old German Wirehaired Pointer had arthritis when he was in a few weeks ago.

  Thanks for the reply.  Last year I had a chocolate Lab that developed severe hip displaysia . The vet tried two different medicines on him. First , they tried etogesic,(sp?) , then they put him on rimadyl  when they found out the etogesic was'nt working for him.  The medicine worked for about 2 weeks , then he came down with a stroke and was paralyzed . I have been reading about vitamin c supplements and glucosamine.

Coyotetrapper:  I have two standard Poodles, 12 and 10 years old.  These dogs are the same size as Labs and are hunters and swimmers.  My oldest has had arthritis for a number of years.   I give him Glucosimine in the form of Shark Cartiledge Tablets and also Condoitin DS in tablet form.  Condroitin also comes in liquid form.  When he gets really sore I will give him Maalox coated or anti-acid coated aspirin, as my Veterinarian tells me he doesn't want the dog to be on Rimidyl (?) for more than 10 days at at time.  

My oldest isn't a Spring Chicken any more but he can get around and doesn't limp or hobble.  I can tell when he is sore, as he is hesitant to climb the stairs and appears to prefer not to get up and go running without sufficient inspiration (like a bone after he comes back in), and give him whatever meds he needs to feel better.  Sometimes he amazes me by just walking right up the stairs without hesitation.  Oh well.

    Thanks for the information. I tried the glucosamine ( sp?) with my chocolate lab, but his hips were just too bad for the glucosamine to be of any help.  Hopefully , my german shorthair pointer will not come down with hip displaysia.
