? regarding browning gun stock. Help PLEASE!!!
« on: September 23, 2007, 05:54:36 AM »
I have a Browning A Bolt White Gold Medallion with a walnut gloss finish (out of box new).  When I was removing the action I took a small chip out of the wood near the bolt removal button (the chip is the size of a thumb nail).  I was wondering what I should put on the chip. Is there a gloss I can use to fill in the chip?  As always, many thanks in advance for any advice.

Best,

Mark

Is the chip is only in the finish? If not I'd cover the exposed finished areas of the stock with masking tape, including the top of the chip. Use a 2-part epoxy(I prefer Devcon 2-ton) mix a small amount thoroughly and carefully press the chip into place. There will be ooze out and any glue that contacts the finish will destroy the polyurethane. Cover all the finished areas!! Be sure to dry fit the chip before gluing to ensure the fit is tight and gap free. If there is fibers in the way they can be removed with a sharp exacto as long as they don't run to the edge, as we would like the fix to be invisible.. Clamp the chip in place if possible or use the masking tape to hold everything in place until to glue completely sets. A bit of steel wool (0000) and a little touch up of poly finishing material and it'll look like new.
