new [ powder ] to me could use some info
« on: October 05, 2007, 06:58:37 AM »
Ok .. i just picked up a pound of shockeys gold ffg,... is this a substitute for black powder ?? cause it looks very different then my old ffg bp ,..

my question is what amount of this ffg gold do i weigh out ?

i loaded between 88 an 100 grains of my old bp to push 175gr  round ball, an others bullets

thanks in advance...

All black powder and black powder replacements should be measured by volume, if you want to weigh the charges measure out the volume you want then weigh that. You will find that the actual weight is less than what a volume measure says it is but that is how it is.

The Shockey gold is a replica black powder and is designed to measure by volume just like Black powder. So 100 grains of JSG by volume would be the equivalent of 100 grains by volume of black powder. The only exception to that would be Hogdon's Triple 7, it is more powerful than black powder, Hodgdon says to reduce by 10% to 15% by volume to duplicate black powder loads.

Of interest the current American Rifleman magazine has a very good article that compares most of the currently available black powders and replicas. Gives velocities, compares, accuracy, ease of cleaning, etc.

thanks... sounds reasonable, after reading the label it only had loads for a 240gr an 300 gr bullet loads marked a 100grns  of powder.. shooting a 175 grainer is why i had asked

its much lighter then the bp on the scale thats  for sure.. so i'll just measure by the volume same as .. an give it a try

i have not shot in many years an a friend just bought a new savage he was asking me about using smokeless.. i had no clue an while asking around it got me interest to shoot again, with so many new things out.. years later i/m back to asking questions myself

I used some JSG for the first time on Friday.  Looking at the gravel size grains I was prepared to be disappointed.

I was wrong.  It shot great -very consistent.  However, I got much lower velocities with JSG than with either Pyrodex or Triple Seven.

I was shooting 385 grain Hornady Great Plains conicals over 90 grains volume of powder at 100 yards.

With T-7, I got a five-shot average of 1583 fps and a 5 & 1/2" group.
With Pyrodex, I got a five-shot average of 1144 fps and a 4" group.
With JSG, I got a five-shot average of 1018 fps and a 1 & 3/4" group.

hey thanks sems''''  just some of the info i was looking for.. i haven't shot the new stuff yet but what i did do was to weigh out the load  it said by volume so i when i put on the scale it came in about 20% lighter
i think i'll test it then just bump it up 100 grns an work from there...  i'm only using a 175 ball  home grown
they say the 777 is pretty dirty... what did you think ?

 thanks

Well T C, I also shot JSG FFG and patched round balls out of my .58 Caliber Zouave last week end.

I posted targets and comments as and add-on comment to my post on the Zouave rifle.

nice article  seems this gold should work well then ... if your barrel was made as mine was.. they are 13thousands .. i'll have to go through my papers an see if i have the sheet that came with the tryon ,, rarely do i throw that stuff out but finding it is another matter

muzzle loader is open here till the 13th  so i have BP in mine rite now so i 'll get to try gold next week or maybe sooner if i get lucky
