Bill,

I use pp in my BC with blackpowder, but have a few loaded to try with smokeless. what dia are these before patching and what are you patching them with? I use 1:30 for mine that are patched to just under bore dia. with the BP, I used a thicker patch to go past bore dia. with the smokeless ones but still haven't made it to a range to see how they do. All I had on hand was H4895 when I loaded mine up. The only load data I had was for a trapdoor using a 485 cast, mine weigh 490 so I figured it was close. I used 40gr of H4895. But check your load books and see what you can find for the others.

these bullets  are casting  right at .452/.453  ill patch them with 9lb onion skin should put me to around .458/.459. was hoping they would be right at .500grain. i cast some in soft lead and some hard should be about Lyman no2 alloy. not looking for maxed out loads but need a starting point.would like to find a powder that would give 100% load density like 8700/1000.thinks for the reply

When patching i use putty soft lead, a half coil of solder to a Lee Production pot full of pure lead.  Forgot what my calculations of  alloy were, but it's my consistent mix and it works.  Seems to me, it was 1:30.

Bill, back in the days of the 1800's, 45-70 PP bullets were cast 1:11 or 1:14.  Here's a link with a picture of some old boxes (Union Metallic - Remington and Winchester) of 45-70 PP bullets with 1:11 and 1:14 on the boxes ...

If I may, wrapped PP bullets with smokeless should be 0.001 over BORE size.  Using black powder, they should be 0.002 to 0.003 over bore size

Hi Guys!

I got my BC about a year ago and wanted to learn about paper patched bullets.  I ran across several articles by Brent Danialson which proved very helpful.  He shoots an 1874  Sharps rifle w/PP B's .  Also I found one of his articles on hunting in Africa with BP.  Some mighty nice trophy plains animals!  Just google his name and words like paper patch bullets sharps etc. and you'll find many articles.  He is a professor at Iowa  University.  I talk with him via email about once a month and he has never failed to give me some well thought info!  He is currently using some under-bore bullets with 9# onionskin paper.  The bullets measure .440 and wrapped they will be right between .450 and .451.  The bullets are seated far out!  Only about 1/4" of bullet is in the case.  I have almost everything I need to try them out!  I bored my 45-70 out to 45-110.  I shot a few rounds on "white" powder - didn't know what to use so I tried 40 gr 3031 behind 525 gr postell's, they worked  but, a little slow and only fills case half way..  I  want to fill up my cases but don't know what to use!  Any suggestions?
