Putting a rivetless extractor in a Rem 700
« on: September 21, 2007, 11:58:04 AM »
I have done it before, but I remember sore thumbs and many curses uttered.  Is there a trick that you can offer which can make it easier?  I just got one in my shop and I dread to start especially when I consider that I have to pay ten bucks or more and am apt to bend that sucker as I did once before.

I made a tool from an old screwdriver handle, I ground a notch into the top of the handle to the inside bolt diameter,  Place one end of the extractor into the bolt face and press the other end with the tool forward and down, because it has the correct diameter it won't kink the extractor. I used to do the procedure inside of a big plastic bag because sometimes it slips and I spend more time looking for the extractor then I like. but know I just hold my other hand over the bolt face.  Good luck

I just sort of flatten them a bit with needle nose pliers on either side of the hook, start the side toward the ejector with my thumb, work it around by hand, and finish up the other end with a flat punch. Maybe 3/16 dia. or so, whatever is handy. It's no problem, and doesn't hurt if done properly. And do keep your thumb over it in case it gets loose and goes flying. If it ends up slightly rotated, just move it with a small screwdriver pushing on one side of the hook or the other. I guess the whole thing is like putting a tire on a bicycle. Start at one end and work to the other.

I really appreciate both of your kinks on this very disagreeable task.  I will certainly give them a try.  Thank you, thank you both.
