45 Winchester Mag Revolver
« on: October 06, 2007, 09:12:29 AM »
I read everyones post about 454's, 500's, 460's but I can't talk about them yet. But I hope to eventually, there sure is alot of opinions here.

I am curious about the 45 Win Mag. Does anyone still make this in a decent revolver, or is it worth while of a caliber trying to find one?

I am having a lot of fun with my 45LC but I want to add another handgun to my collection for hunting game from Black Bear down, but still not ready for any of those really big boys yet, but one day I'll get there.

FA once offered an interchangeable cylinder in .45 Win. Mag. for their Mdl. 83 .454 Casull, but I doubt that they still do. Frankly, it doesn't make any sense to do so in a revolver. Since the case headspaces on the mouth, it is difficult to apply a heavy enough roll crimp to prevent bullet creep with very heavy loads, without running the danger of the case mouth slipping past the shoulder in the chamber, thereby causing poor ignition, or even worse, dangerously high pressures.
The .50 AE has these same potential problems in a revolver, and in fact is even more potentially problematic, because the case is tapered and can't even be taper crimped well. The .500 WE is also rimless, but belted, with the cartridge headspacing on the belt and thereby overcoming the potential headspacing and crimping problem that is present with the .45 Win. Mag. Some people have intuitively shied away from the WE, fearing or not understanding the precision of the belt, but in actual practice it works very, very well.
Gene, my suggestion to you for a revolver to use from Black Bear on down, while avoiding the mega-guns, would be to select a good .44 Magnum. It can do it all, and do it very well, on game that size.

I have a revolver that shoots 45 Win Mag and other lengths, the headspace is not a problem because it uses moon clips.

Moon clips in a double action and a roll crimp would certainly fix it. Is yours a custom Ruger ?

No it is a Dan Wesson 460 Supermag, I can shoot 45 ACP, 45 Win Mag or 460 Supermag which is a Win mag case lengthened to 1.610 in length, it is the only one made and is serial number one.

There was 3000 brass made for the gun for Dan Wesson. They are 460 Supermag headstamped brass made by Bertram brass in Australia if I remember correctly. Dj Bushman (designer of the 460SM and ballistics tester for DW when it was made) offerred to sell me 100 of them for $200.00. So I guess not really parent brass since it is a stretched 45 Win Mag.

Bertram :o I hope it is better quality than the rest of the junk I've seen from them. I'll assume it is. What are the ballistics like?
