Winchester model 94 30-30 value?

A buddy wants to trade me a model 94 30-30 that he bought new in the early 90's for a set of atv wheels and tires that are worth 400.00 dollers,  the winchester is in exellent condition, Is the gun worth more less or equal to $400.00 thanks

If it's in excellent condition, as you say, and especially if it's a pre-safety top eject model, it's worth MUCH more than $400.  I've seen NIB models go for the mid sixes.

There is a shop locally that has only two price tags on Winchester 94s in 30-30.  One is $329 and the other is $399.  The more expensive are in slightly better condition but they alll look very nice.  If I wanted another 94 in that caliber I wouldn't hesitate to pick up either price tag.  If your friend is looking for $400 it is probably right on the money although the stores raise the prices to cover their profit needs; this may be a really good trade, as long as he doesn't want to throw his wife and dog into the mix.  Just a thought.   Mikey.

I didnt make the deal yet, but he let me bring it home after work to see what i could find out about it,  its the ranger, it has lighter colored wood, no hammer safty, first two serial numbers are 55. a few small rust spots, but no deep pitting.

I have one my dad gave me in 1956; it's still in excellent condition and shoots great-I understand it's worth something over $600.

I think he should throw in some boot.  The Ranger was the less expensive model.  This has nothing to do with its utility as a hunting and shooting weapon, but it does affect any collector value.  I am old enough that I gave my safety equipped Model 94 to one of my daughters.  I could not get the hang of the safety, and came close to missing a nice buck.   Fortunately, he was even dumber than me and came back to see what antics I was up to next.  After not firing an ejecting four rounds, I realized that the safety was on, and the fifth one put meat on the table.  I disagree with Mikey on the boot, though, if your pal's  wife can cook, and if the dog has papers.

If it has rust spots, I wouldn't rate it at $400.  Ranger model and without seeing the gun, $250 range.

It is the pre-1964 models that are getting $450 (+) in any condition.  I have 2 post '64s that I have less than $300 total in.  They are ugly, but function great!  1970 mystery metal receivers did not hold the bluing at all.

IMO, prices for Winchester 94's are overly inflated right now as there is much speculation about when and if the 94 will be made again.  That has driven the prices up.  Personally, I wouldn't give over $250 for a good one.

I am going to a gun show tomorrow and will take a look at what they are bringing around here.  Last time I looked was about six months ago and post 64s were well under $400, and pre 64s were in the $400 range for common shooters.

Edit:

Today I saw shooters starting at $250 on up.  Plenty of folks thought they had collectors items in their AE Rangers but they sat on the tables.  Pre '64s were starting at about $500 and the sky was the limit.

I swapped my AE for a new Glock 19 and four magazines a couple of years ago, when the frenzy was at its peak.  I doubt the shop would be so kind now.
