American Knight .50 caliber
« on: September 22, 2007, 04:45:34 AM »
I made a good buy on a centerfire rifle from a woman who was selling some guns and this muzzleloader was part of the deal.  I've never owned a Knight before, only Thompsons.  Can anyone tell me the rate of twist on this gun and if there are any 209 conversion kits available for it?  Right now it has a musket cap nipple.  I know it has a Green Mountain barrel on it but that's about all I know about it.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

.308 Win.,

The American Knight (USAK) has a 1-28" rate of twist. Yes you can buy a 209 conversion. The Knight site is down right now, so I'll give you a Cabelas link.

Thanks, Busta.  That was what I wanted to hear.  This gun dates back to like 1997 or something so I wanted to make sure it had a 1:28 twist and to see if the 209 conversion would be possible.  Thanks again.

Your welcome. I see that Cabelas link is down now and Knight's site is back up. Knight also used to make a Non-Full Plastic Jacket conversion that the 209 primer sits inside. You might want to give them a call, you could probably get one at a good price if any are left. The site only lists the replacement plugs for these.

Here is a link to the current conversion.

These are for the Non-FPJ conversions. You would still need the 209 hammer assembly and 7/16" wrench.

Thanks again, Busta.  I printed this off and will call them about it.

Had an American 2 years ago.it came with the 209 primer plug and it required the use of their full plastic jacket primer holders.I quickly swapped out for a regular percussion plug and used both musket caps and # 11's with complete success ( triple 7 powder). When I used the 209's I kept getting my forehead sandblasted from the blow back. Sometimes the primer came apart or the fpj was blown off the nipple.I think you need a locking breech mechanism such as a bolt or break open design to keep the fpj's in place.A plunger type just didn't cut it for me.Accuracy improved with the musket/#11 caps btw.It was an excellent rifle.
