broken nipple T/C Firestorm
« on: September 22, 2007, 06:05:55 PM »
I recently aquired a used T/C Firestorm with a musket nipple.  The nipple has broken off so that the threaded part is still attached to the breech plug and the portion that holds the cap is gone.

I've tried to remove this with and easy-out without any luck so far.  Any ideas?

The "worst-case" scenerio, is that you'll have to order a new breechplug from T/C, so (B 4 U do) match a drill bit to the root diameter of the threaded portion of the new/good nipple (or 209 seat), and drill out the remains of the old musket-cap nipple, leaving it's threads in the breechplug - which can later be either picked out or chased out with a tap.

It's a FireHawk not FireStorm.  An inline.

Looks like I will be go the route to drill it out and re-tap at this point.  Easy-outs are not hard enough.  A real pain to have to go through the receiver.  It would be hard enough if this were a sidelock.

Really my own fault.  This gun was badly abused when I got it.  I pulled the nipple and noticed it was in rough shape.  Should have replaced it then.

I would start with a soak in KROIL and then I'd use a left handed twist drill in a size a bit smaller than the root diameter. Too much chance of thread damage from an off side hole.. The left hand twist drill will many times remove the stub before it completes the hole.. The KROIL is the best penetrating oil I found..
