Question for color blind hunters...
« on: September 23, 2007, 12:42:47 PM »

Perhaps you can be a great service to the rest of us...

I have often wondered if deer, being color blind, can easily pick out the bright orange color due to it's pure brightness,

assuming that a man's silhouette would stand out greatly, despite the color itself...         ..Does the shape show against background ?

Does the dark areas in a camo pattern help to break up the shape or silhouette ?

                                                                                       Thanks...Ironglow

Have no fear!  It has been studied, and it seems that deer don not see blaze orange. If it required where you hunt, then definitely wear it. Deer do see UV brightened clothing, and washing your clothes with UV killer can help. The deer's main defense is smell. If you set up where they cannot wind you, you are ahead of the game. Deer also pick up movement, so it is prudent to stay still on stand as well. I would say that that the more you break up your silhouette, the better off you are, either from the camo pattern, or brush where you set up

Here in Northern NY, we are not required to wear orange, but when I hunt Pa or Southern Zone NY, where it is required, I have never had a deer pick me up because I am wearing orange. Usually, it is the wind, or I moved to quickly or at the wrong time. I'm not color blind, but I hope this helps.

People discuss at length, great length, the precise camo to wear and what time of year to wear it and then they discuss scent blockers and all the other stuff designed to trap the unwary and stupid hunters.  And they never seem to consider the two most important things in hunting. BEING STILL AND WIND DIRECTION. If a drug sniffing dog can smell a sack of dope inside of a gas tank, a deer sure as hell can smell you if you're upwind no matter what scent blocker you have on. And, no matter what kind of camo you have on, the deer will spot you if you can't sit still.  If you are constantly smoking --its not the smoke, its the action-- unwrapping candy, scratching, picking your nose, cranning around, fiddling with your rifle, making noise, etc, the deer will spot you.  If you don't pay attention to those two things, no matter how much money you spend on "stuff" you will never be a good hunter.

To answer your question, my dad is color blind and he says it stands out like a sore thumb, just like it does to the rest of us I assume.  However, does it really matter?  On one hand you can hunt safely, and probably not run off any whitetails if you are sitting still and not allow yourself to be skylined.  On the other hand, you MIGHT have a LITTLE better chance of not being seen by the deer OR the other hunter with the 7 mag.  Do yourself a favor, wear the orange.

A color blind person and a deer aren't the same thing. Deer's sight is at a different wavelength (color range) than ours. They can't see reds near as well as us so they probably don't see orange well. They see much further into the ultraviolent range than we do so they see blues very well. That is the reason they see brighteners well. My understanding is the best camo in the world if washed in detergent with brighteners is going to be light a beacon to a deer.

Hi all.
I am color blind, and have no problem seeing blaze orange.
I also can see deer sometimes when non color blind people have trouble with them blending on with the back ground.
My biggest problem is with matching socks and getting in the wrong car.LOL

  Thanks for the replies, guys..

As Beeman says, remaining still and quiet is more important than most other details..but I still do have some concern with blaze orange..guess I'll just have to break up the
solid orange color (camo?).
Perhaps as some said deer vision and human color blindness bear no relationship..then Stan says even with his color blindness, orange still stands out..

I guess more research is called for..
