Rifle caliber recoil in pistol length barrels...
« on: September 22, 2007, 08:48:47 AM »
Guys I have been looking at barrels for what seems like days...I know I will get a .44 mag just so I can share ammo with my Super Blackhawk...what is the recoil like on a .270 in a 15" barrel (compared to say a Super Blackhawk in .44 mag) I know the longer barrel will help some but how much...don't want to get anything that makes me say foul words the first time it goes off in my hand and makes me flinch every shot afterwards...was looking at something like the 7mm-08 for its flat shooting and mild recoil and I think that's what Larry Weishun uses in his TC on TV and it looks pretty manageable or a 257 Roberts maybe even something like a 6.5 Grendel (AR-15 in that caliber...I like to share ammo)...I am a total Encore rookie...just ordered it yesterday so if you guys can point to some other calibers for deer hunting in a pistol barrel length that would be great...don't have time for anything custom this year...rifle season starts in 1 1/2 months...

Thanks in advance...

I have a 308 16 1/4 barrel that is manageable. . 7-08 would be similar . I don't want a muzzle brake because of added noise so I don't plan on anything larger.

I shoot both the 7-08 and 308 both are very manageable and a great selection of bullets are available.  I find the recoil a little bit stiffer than full house 44 mag loads in my Super Blackhawk, but still manageable.

Maybe it's ME, but my .44 SBH reoils more than my .308(12") or the 7-30 and 30-30 14" T/c's .I have not fired the .44 in a couple years. I developed some carpal tunnel and arthritis that makes the .44 uncomfortable to handle.

Thanks guys...I forgot about the 7-30 Waters...that would be a good choice also...

Is that a standard taper barrel on your Encore?...looks like scope base at the front is shimmed to match the taper (might be a shadow)...will the heavy taper do the same thing (if its not a shadow) do I need to go with the bull barrel...

While we are on the subject...can anyone tell me what the weight differences are between the tapers ...standard, heavy, bull...pounds per inch if anyone knows...

That is a standard tapered barrel, as to weight??? don't have access to a scale here. That is just a shadow under the scope base.

recoil in my 7 waters is much lighter then any gun ive shot in 44 mag. It kills real well too. Only problem is my barrel is a ported hunter and that darned thing sure is LOUD! It shoots under an inch a 100 yards and id have no qualms about taking a shot out to 200 yards on deer sized game with it.

My best accuracy with a 7-08 in a 14 1/2" XP comes from a 139 Hornady @ 2450 fps. My best accuracy from a .308 XP and a 15" Encore runs a 150 Hornady @` 2500-2550 fps. Both are scoped, and of course heavier than an iron sighted SBH. I find the recoil to be a hair less than a full charge iron sighted SBH. I would guess that a 15" 270 Win. would run a 130 @~ 2600-2650 fps.

I think your idea of the 6.5 Grendel is a good one. I shoot a 6.5x55 in a 12" Encore and it is very manageable and accurate out to 200 yards. Past that range I am limited by the 2x scope. My brother shoots a 308 Encore in 15" and it is also accurate and manageable in my opinion since I have shot it. I choose the 6.5 Swede to compliment my collection of 6.5 rifles, a truly convenient concept.

I truly think the 6.5 Grendel would be a smoking round for the Encore...shooting the 129 SST in my AR15 is almost no fun due to them all going in the same hole...the 6.5 Grendel idea is to allow me to swap the same ammo between different guns same with the .44 Mag...helps with ammo cost for us non hand loaders...yes its not very unique and you have two guns for the same caliber but one in a pistol and one in a rifle is just fine with me...especially when I don't want to carry that 15+ pound AR into the woods to climb a tree...

Do they make the WSSM's in the Encore...

Is there a site that will show caliber...optimum pistol length barrel for said caliber (meaning full powder burn and long enough to stabilize)...optimum twist rate for grain bullet for said caliber?

A lot depends on personal preference, I've shot many hard hitter rifle calibers that are less recoiling and softer hitting than in a rifle. on that same note I've shot some pip-squeak rounds for a rifle that smack pretty hard in a pistol length, mainly I've come to the conclusion that as long as you stay at 14 or more inches you'll do just fine with it.
