I guess I am stepping away from the big boomers. I just traded my M77 .300 Win Mag for a new M70 Featherweight 6.5X55. Now the most powerful bolt gun in my stable is a 7mm Rem Mag. I havent' hunted with the .300 for 10 years, lately preferring to carry the 7mm or my '06. I do still have a Win 1886 45-70, which has some muzzle thump. I guess the point is, for what I hunt (mule deer, elk, antelope) the moderate cartridges are fine, and easier to shoot, to boot.

WITH THE BIG BORES IT IS TO EACH THERE OWN. I CAN UNDERSTAND SOME PEOPLE DON'T LIKE A LOT OF KICK AND THAT IS VERY SENSIBLE BECAUSE YOU DON'T NEED A BASEBALL BAT IF YOU ARE HUNTING A FLY. TO ME THOUGH I EXPECT SOME KICK........DEAD IS DEAD EITHER WAY, BUT I LIKE TO WATCH THEM BLOW UP.

What you yellin for? ( Caps mean your yelling

) I sold a 300 Weatherby for the same reason. Bought my first 30-06 last year and wondered why I had been shooting that hard kicking rifle for so long. I hunt Alaska every year, and if I didn't I wouldn't have any magnums. Now I have a 338 Win mag. I don't think it kicks as hard as the 300 did. Should sell it and get a 35 Whelen made on one of my FN'S...

Congrats on your very sensible thinking! :wink: While you are at it, sell that 7mm mag also. For your quarry you won't need any more gun than your 6.5x55. Think of the ammo and everything else you could buy for the price of that mag you don't need.
