Rimmed brass in 45 acp Tracker
« on: December 29, 2006, 07:07:31 PM »
I hate the "stellar" clips for the tracker, they tend to bend causing the case head to push back and make the cylinder bind. I think auto rim brass has too thick a rim to use. I've thought about trimming 45 colts back to acp length and loading them, or even having it boared out to 45 scofield. Has anybody tried either or am I the only one having this problem with the stellar clips?

Thanks

I haven't had that happen with the stellar clips, but I've stored them in an old medication vial from Walgreens since I got them.  I will agree that they are pretty flimsy.  I recently ordered some 45 AR's from Reed's Ammunition and they functioned flawlessly.  I love my Tracker.

One note on the scofield is that the rims are a bit wider than the 45 colt but they did fit (but rubbed) in my 450 so they should fit in your gun. Another thought is that trimmed colt brass may be too thick in the neck area once you trim it down. I'm assuming you were refering to length when you mentioned boring out for the scofield. It may work better to trim down scofield cases rather than the colt (less work).
Just another worthless opinion!!

I just got in from shooting a friend's Tracker.  He lent it to me before Christmas, but this is the first time I have been able to work with it.  I liked everything about the Tracker, but the clips. Only one would hold the rounds well enough to keep from any coming out before loading the gun.  I have a Smith & Wesson that uses full moon clips and they are much more substantial.    When my friend first bought the gun, I got out a box of Auto-Rim brass I had left over from a custom loading order some years ago.  There was no way to make them fit.  Rather than have the cylinder rechambered for .45 Schofield, I would have the breech end faced off, the chambers deepened to handle .45 ACP, and use Auto-Rim cases.  That way, it would still be possible to fire .45 ACP, though each cartridge would have to be pushed out with a pencil or something.

I was at a gun shop and saw a 45acp 5 shot in titanium for sale is this the tracker?  It is extremely lite.  I see the clips for loading the 45acp was with the gun.  I don't know anything about the gun likes and dislikes; however, it is interesting.  The gun is almost new asking $420.00.  I was told that it originally was a 600.00 gun.  Would appreciate input.

I have a new Taurus Tracker in .45 ACP. I bought 500 of the .45 Cowboy Special Cases. They work perfectly in my Tracker. In fact, I had it to the indoor range today (miserable weather around here outside) and the Specials are just dandy. They are priced competitively and appear to be excellent brass.

When reloading with cast bullets (I prefer 200 gr H&G #130 or H&G #68) overall loaded length is critical with my Taurus, at least. The chamber mouths are tight (my bullets are sized at .452"). I found it necessary to seat the bullets so the wad cutting shoulder is flush with the end of the case. They shot VERY well at fifty feet with a target load of Win 231.

I am very happy with revolver and most happy to have found the Cowboy Special Cases.

I purchased 100 Starline 45 LC brass and trimmed them down to 45 acp length.  So far they have worked great with jacketed bullets.  Not sure how lead bullets will do.

As for loads, I hope to come up a good deer load for my Tracker.  Eventhough it is a so burning powder, I have found Ramshot Enforcer to be an excellent powder for high velocity loads for the 45 acp.  With 15.7 grains of Enforcer under a 200 Hornady XTP I get 1175 fps with Winchester brass.  Maximum powder charge is 16.2 grains according to Ramshot.  I should be able to get 1200 fps with this bullets and make a dandy deer load.

I use trimmed .45 colt brass with no problems in my 455, I can't wait for the .45 special brass to arrive.
