H&R ULTRA and S&B .223 ammo?
« on: September 26, 2007, 04:40:41 AM »
I will be recieving my H&R ultra on friday, i already read that winchester USA 45 gr hollow points are best with the 55gr FMJ by winchester a close second.... heres my question i already have 1000 rds green box S&B brass boxer .223 ammo, has anyone recieved good accuracy with this round? it only shot OK out of my AR but that had a 1/9 twist while the ultra has a 1/12 which i think will be better for the smaller 55gr bullet... i shoot 500 yrd with .223 often, and need a good load for this combo...yes i know factory ammo just doesnt cut that range usually but i am really curious how S&B ammo worked for the .223 in H&R and NEF rifles... really appreciate it..............

Unless this barrel you are getting is an older one it will also be 1-9 you may want to check it can't help ya on the ammo as I reload for the 223. Kurt

I agree with PHATINJUN, it will most likely be a 1-9 if it's a newer model.
I have used Wolf as many others have. But it's dirty and accuracy is mum at best. For the price you can reload for close to the same and have hand fitted ammo to your rifle. Much better considering you will be hitting your targets rather than dancing around them ;D

ahhhh i called them and they said yes 1/9 twist...that actually make me happy... so anyone shoot S&B .223??? i just ordered some prvi match 75 garin bullets from midway for about $9 a box, this ammo shoots great from AR's... will see with the NEF... now that i know the gun is 1/9 i would like to know people experience with the cheaper ammo offered..... thanks a million.... will reload in future when get equipped...but for now stuck with factory ammo...thanks for heads up guys.............

My 1in9" likes Winchester 55g ballistic tips. (see target)

Also Federal's American Eagle 55g FMJ hit about the same point of aim.
Not as accurate but cheap and I don't have to play with the scope.

Hannah, my Ultra .223 with 1 in 9 likes the heavier bullets.  Black Hill Ammo 77 grain Moly HP, BH 68 grain Heavy Match...also had good luck with 75 A-Max.

PHEW!!!!!!!!!! glad to hear your gun likes the heavier bullets... so far PRVI 75 grain match bullets are the only cheap truly accurate ammo i can find.........for $9 a box it's a bargain with todays prices.... i still have 1000 rds of the S&B 55 grain so i will be forced to shoot her with it until the match ammo arrives... the 1/9 twist especially with the full 24 inch barrel i figured would stablize the 75gr match ammo...thanks for the heads up... i will post the accuracy when rifle arrives and ammo... in meantime love to hear expericnce with ammo....

hannah, I have had very good luck with the S&B 55gr. FMJ in my .223UV. I have put thru more than 200 rounds after initial break-in and I have shot many moa and a few sub-moa groups @ 100yds. My reloads perform better, but for factory the S&B does very well for me and my rifle. It is a 1-12 twist. I also have had success, like many others, with the WWB hp's when they were available. I have also reloaded the S&B brass with good results.

Good luck and have fun!
