6mm X 45 stub project range report

The last time I took it to the range I was playing with some 90 grain Nosler BT and stumbled on to this load it is 24 grains of IMR 4895 it move the bulllet at an average of 2450 FPS.

 Good shooting. ;D  Stimpy has found that IMR 4895 works well in his 223 with 55 grain bullets. I am gana to get some ;) I have been using some faster burning powders. When I was at my local store all they had was H4895. I am under the impression they are not interchangeable.

I only use IMR 4895 for 223. The issue of interchanging H4895 and IMR4895 is a point of debate with me. You have to remember that when Hodgdon started up they where packaging and selling surplus government powder. There h4895 was nothing more than surplus IMR 4895. I treat them the same. And some burning rate charts do also. But I also rework up my loads when ever I change powder lots. That isn't terrible often since when I get a load figured out I then purchase an 8 lb can and go back throught the process and verify the load with the new lot of powder. I believe if I remember correctly there is only supposed to be a 3% difference between lots of canister grade powder. And now that hodgdon owns IMR I expect there will be even less differences.

I'll also add my support for using IMR 4895 in the .223.  I've had very good results using it with Winchester bulk 46 gr and bulk Remington 50 & 55 gr bullets.

What kind of chamber wall thickness did you end up with on your barrel before you put it in the stub?  Larry

Larry I don't remember the numbers right off the top of my head but. the very stub end is whatever a 12 gauge rim diameter is and the rest of it is whatever a 12 ga shotgun chamber is bored just enough to straighten it up I believe that number was .810. the base of a 223 remington case .37x  so the leaves .21x wall thickness. I see no issues Remington runs there ultra mag series just under .200 and that is a 65000 psi round.
