Stevens 200 (Puts a grin on my face)
« on: January 30, 2008, 05:08:58 AM »
My cousin and I recently went out separately and each got a .223.  He got a Remington SPS Varmint with the heavy barrel and I got a Stevens 200 with the sporter barrel.  When we went out and shot, mine grouped all within an inch of each other.  His performed equally as well with the varmint set-up.
I was using just Remington Cor-lokts 55 gr soft points(the cheap stuff) and he was shooting Black Hills Gold 52 gr Moly MHP's.  After it was over he was trying to talk me into a trade.  We both had wanted a CARRY varmint gun and I got exactly what I wanted for half the money and about half the weight as well and those two things are what frustrated him the most.  I just patted my Stevens with a big ol' grin and told him "She ain't for sale."

All of this even took place 3 days after he made a 482 yard shot on a coyote with his gun.   ;D

Do they make aftermarket stocks for those 200's?  I used to have a Savage in .30/06 and I sold it.  Wish I hadn't.  It was a 111 model.  Is the trigger on your stock 200 fairly decent?  I am wanting another .308 and the dealer I use a lot has a 200 in that caliber.  Thanks.

.308 Win.

I don't know if they make aftermarket stocks for the 200??  I have heard that if the stock would fit a Savage Model 110 it would fit the 200.  The trigger....is decent but not spectacular but I can live with it for the way it shoots and the cost of the rifle.  If you get the .308 let me know how it does.  My cousin.....is trying to decide now between another .223 or a .308 in a 200.

Redfox33,

If both the 200 and 110 actions are the same, barrels the same, too, then I don't see why they wouldn't interchange.  If I get one, I'll let you know.  I'm thinking really hard about it.

Savage is now making the 200s with a center feed mag which is attached to the stock rather than the receiver. So you must use a center feed stock to replace them and they are hard to come by because no one is making them yet.  Both guns must have the same action, (SA or LA) and both must be center feed.  Savage Center feed stocks from Savage will interchange with Stevens as long as those requirements are met. Although there may be an Issue with the accutrigger versus the Stevens trigger.
Rifle Basix makes a nice adjustable trigger for the Savages and Stevens for around 69 bucks if you shop around.

:)If you don't like the stock... just give it a face-lift with some camo paint. They look pretty good after the camo is done. Even if you leave the barrel unpainted. 8)

And that's,NoBull ;D

could someone go into some detail as to what the differences between the two styles(center feed vs. staggered) is.  Is it length, width, depth, or what?????

It is a width problem.

In the older style Stevens the internal magazine held the cartridges in a zig zag pattern.  They would feed into the chamber from either left of center or right of center and this sometimes caused them to hang up when being chambered.

The center feed magazine keeps all the cartridges in line, one directly on top of the next one, in the center of the magazine.  They then feed into the chamber from the center of the magazine box and not left or right of center.  This is supposed to reduce feeding problems.

I'm waiting for a local dealer to get the new style in before I buy one.

hpdrifter, The staggered magazine is attached to the action and the center fed magazine is attached to the stock.

Here is my target @ 100 yards from my Stevens 200 in .308 shooting Berger bullets over Varget powder. This is "post bedding" the factory stock with Davcon.

Of course...then since the gun is a "keeper" I had to get rid of the "ugly" grey....so I did the camo paint thing:

Let me put it to you this way.  Stevens 200 in 308Win.  Five shots = 5 deer.  Nuff said.
This is the day the Lord has made.  I choose to rejoice and be glad in it.
