XS Ghost Ring Sights...How far do you shoot?
« on: October 21, 2007, 04:22:36 PM »
How far do you guys shoot with the XS Ghost Ring set-up? I have mine on a .44mag 1894 and I have shot it to 50 yards with good results, but I am thinking about moving out to 75 or 100 yards and see what the results are. I am just wondering what to expect.

If you use the right sort of target you can be pretty accurate out to surprising range.  Use something like an 6 or 8" all back bullseye or white paper plate and aim for the middle.    The bigest mistake a lot of people make when trying to target shoot with peeps or low power scopes is using the same grid style targets they use for mid to upper end optics.   By aiming for the center of a object like that you can still be pretty precise.   You could also try using a 2-4" orange dot and using a 6 oclock hold.  I have had better luck by aiming for the center of the larger target.  You can make some suprisingly good groups at 100-300 yards using this technigue.  I have shot some very respectable groups with my 9.3x62 w/2.5x scout scope at 300 yards.   I also used to shoot my marlin guide gun with xs ghost rings out to 150 yards and scout scope to 200 yards regulary with good effect.   with a little practice I'm sure you will surprise yourself.

[How far do you shoot?]

JMO, But you'll probably get a wide range of answers, depending upon each person's eyesight, ability, and how their rifle's sights are set up.

With the larger-sized bead on some of my rifles, I only can shoot out to about 75 yards before the bead obscures the animal.

I have a finer bead on a few others, which I use for paper & smaller animal targets - or larger animals out to the limits of the cartridge & me with iron sights - about 125yds.

Thanks. I was just curious if I was realistic in wanting to shoot 100 yards with my set-up. I believe I will be fine and within M.O.Deer.

I have the xs rear ghost ring, but I have a thinner front sight post. I wanted something thinner than the XS post so I found one that was a good bit thinner and although I had to file it down some, it has worked out very well.

Now I just have to find time to get to the range and test it out. It shoots great groups at 50 yards so I am hopeful.

my 1894 44 with XS ghost ring set up shoots 44 spl's in one hole at 50 yards. Full load 44 mags shoot about 3" on 3 shot groups. I can't tell why I get that spread but it's there. I then went out to 100 yrds. I really need to work up a consistent load for this. I bought 50 rds of factory 240gr jhp and was lucky to have 3 shot in  7". Now some may say operator error, and maybe your right, but I shoot a lot of  other rifles at 100-200 yrds and typically have the three shots touching.
Any input out there would be nice. I like the idea of hunting deer with the 44 1894 but if i can't get the groups down to about 2" off a steady rest, i may have to stay to 50 yard shots.l

I have them on my .450 Guide Gun, and they are great in thick cover. I have them sighted in dead on at 50 yards, and they are quite a bit low at 100. For me they are a 50-75 yard sight, and they do the job well. However, I'm thinking of adding a low power scope or scout mounted scope for next season.
