6.8 SPC and White Tail Deer
« on: March 11, 2007, 04:48:58 AM »
I am in the process of buying a rifle in 6.8 SPC and have ordered reloading components for this cartridge. I am interested in anyone's experiences with this round for deer hunting. Things like bullet performance of various bullet brands and weights, general info on reloads and field experiences. Thank you in advance for any help.

I have both rifle and handgun in 6.8spc.
A good place to start is 110gr sierra prohunters and H-322 powder this combo shoots very well for me and knocks the snot out of coyotes i haven't tryed it on deer but have talk to others that have used this combo and have been happy with it.

I remember reading an article in American Hunter when the round came out in Remington Firearms. They killed cougar's with it.

I did find some information on the cartridge as a deer round. I looked at component bullets in 277 caliber on www.midwayusa.com . I read the reviews on specific bullets and there is much information to be found there. The most praised is the Barnes 110 grain triple shock. I have been looking at corelokt 130's but they may be to heavy for the 6.8

Two out of the four deer that are in the freezer are there, thanks to the 6.8 that I shoot in my Contender. Great round and very deadly on deer. I had some problems with the Remington bullets, but the Hornady rounds were perfect. Remington must have had some bad primers or something. And no help at all from Remington.

No experience here, but on paper it looks interesting.  I would assume that it is a very low recoiling cartridge with plenty of power for deer (especially the dog sized deer I'm used to).

I've almost taken the 6.8 AR plunge a couple of times, but I don't reload.  Good luck.

Hey Cheesehead,
About where in Wisconsin do you hunt?  I was there last November and I loved every second of it.  Do you hunt private or public land?  I'm just curious.

I hunt NW Wisconsin, a blend of private and public, some National Forest areas. Near towns like Minong, Birchwood, Clam Lake and Rice Lake. Many of the private lands I formally hunted are unavailable now so its time to focus more on the public lands. Where in WI did you hunt Teddy?

I went to an outfitter in Buffalo County.  I never so many deer in my life there and the terrain was breath taking.  In North East Indiana it's all flat land for the most part and it's increasingly difficult to find places to hunt.  Not to mention it's shotgun only and I like to rifle hunt so I travel a little ways each year and get out of town.

I have fired about 500 rounds through this AR in an M4 configuration. This little rifle is light and compact. The recoil is no more than the 223 and the 6.8 has more energy at 100 yards and beyond than the proven deer cartridge, the 30-30. This rifle and cartridge combination is very accurate with the 115 and 130 grain bullets I have hand loaded. The AR is made by Bushmaster and I am pleased with the quality and performance. I recommend it.
