Rossi Problems! Please Help
« on: August 21, 2007, 02:09:04 PM »
Hi, I recently bought a .308 Rossi rifle new from Gander Mountain. I shot the gun for the first time this week and enjoyed the shooting session until the gun would not open any more. I cannot open the breech to put load another round in the chamber. I took it back to Gander Mountain, and the gunsmith said that it had a broken firing pin and that Gander Mountain would not repair under warranty but charge me around $75 dollars to do the repair. Is he correct that I have a broken firing pin? When I push the lever to open the breech, I can see down through the breach and the firing pin looks just fine. It does not appear to be broken. I am thinking that it might be from something broken in the shell extractor that is not allowing the breech to open, but I do not know. I really need advice, as I don't know what is causing the breach to not open? Has anyone heard of this problem? , or does anyone know what might be wrong with the gun?

Does it open any or is it still locked up tight?  What part of the fireing pin can you see?  Larry

It will open just a crack. This small crack of space allows me to see the firing pin sticking out. Its as if something is catching, but it will now allow the gun to open.

if you can see the firing pin sticking out when you crack the action open,it maybe that it protruded the primer to where its sticking in it...therefore keeping the action shut. The firing pin could then very well be broken, or a spring. After shooting,it should return to where you cant see it.
 I would think.
aim small miss small,
think small,miss not at all

I am not really sure. The receipt I got said, the gun would be on warranty from them for a year. I have only shot the gun once, and have only owned the gun since August 1. I think the gunsmith just didn't want to work on a cheaper gun. I am a bit upset with Gander Mountain. I have spent a lot of money at that store buying odds and ends, from archery to muzzleloaders.

The pin appears to be sticking out all of the time, and does not seat back into its hole.

If the pin is broken and you force it open you may dent up the fireing pin hole in the breach, which would be bad.  The fireing pin may just be stuck, does the back part of it move in and out?  Is the transfer bar down when the hammer is down and the trigger is not pulled back?  If the transfer bar is stuck up then it will hold the fireing pin out also.  Larry

I assume there is a spent shell in the action. If it were my gun I would try giving the butt of the gun a few fairly solid raps on a carpeted floor with the muzzle pointing up to see if I could dislodge the stuck firring pin so that I could open the action.  Once I had it open I would see if I could figure out why the firing pin is not returning to it's proper position.

I'd see if I could push the firing pin back into the frame with a ¼" wood dowel down the bore. ;)

That's another option, but the spent shell may get in the way.

In any case I would be going further up the ladder at Gander Mountain to politely demand that they honor their written (I assume) warranty policy.

p.s.; Not sure about how it is where you guys work, but I don't have much say in what I will or won't work on.  ;)

I am assuming that if the firing pin does not go back into position, then the action will not open up. Am I correct about this? Would you guys know how hard it is to get to the firing pin, to replace it? Do you have to take all of the internal parts of the trigger out of the of the gun? Is there a screw on the back of the firing pin that can be backed out to get to the firing pin?

As I recall the fireing pin is held in by a pin through the side of the receiver, the fireing pin has a notch in it that the pin passes under and holds it in place.  That is how I recall it working.  I think you can get the fireing pin out by driving out that pin, letting the hammer part way down without the trigger pulled back to drop the transfer bar out of the way.  ?????
