need some info on 44 special contender
« on: October 02, 2007, 05:08:04 AM »
Hi, I have a chance to buy a custom 10" contender 44 special barrel like NIB. It's a real nice barrel and was thinking of adding it to my  T/C  barrels but had a ?? about FPS out of a 10" barrel. Does anyone know how much FPS the 44 special normally gains out of a 10" barrel I can't find any measurements other than 4" and 6" barrels.  I see factory ammo listed from 750 FPS to 1000FPS out of 4 and 6" barrels but would like to know a idea of what to expect from a 10" barrel. Thanks for any help!

I would guess with factory ammo you would see the high side of that estimate.

With the light factory loads you will not see a huge gain, perhaps 50-100 fps.  While the .44 Mag gains around 175 fps going from a 6" to a 10" barrel (G&A June 1988 pg. 47), it is loaded to much high pressures.  A .45LC, which is loaded to around the same pressure as a .44 SPL, gains 103 fps from a 6" to a 10" barrel.  For the .38 SPL, it's about 73 fps.
