Quick, question about 2x20 Simmons
« on: October 03, 2007, 05:00:50 AM »
Quick, a while back you had mentioned that you had purchased one of the 2x20 Simmons from CDNN and planed to put it on a 45-70.  How did that scope work out for you?  Any feedback would be appreciated.  What seems to be the working eye relief?  I believe I have a couple of guns that those would work well on.  I know they are inexpensive, but I still don't want to buy something I may not be happy with.  44 Man

Eye relief is 6", but I've never taken it to the range yet, so I don't know how tough it is or how consistent the adjustments are. In centering the reticle and bore sighting, it worked as expected. MSP Ret has two of em, maybe he has some field experience with his.

Quick, you sound like you are in the same situation I am.  I'm always buying more guns, but sometimes I think that's not necessarily what I need.  What I really need is more time to enjoy and shoot the ones I already own!  I hope MSP ret takes a look here and responds.  44 Man

I PMd him, he should get back with ya later today. ;)

A fella can never have too many guns, but it does present issues like this, other guns I "need" to shoot, so not all of em get to the range, I have yet to shoot the 7mm-08 Encore pistol barrel or the K31 I bought a year ago. ::)

If you're talking about the 2.5 x 20 shotgun scopes they are pretty good. I have 2 that are about 10 years old (they sure have come down in price). If memory serves they were about $50 back then. I had one on my 45/70 briefly before changing to a 2x7 Nikon. I have one on a pump 12ga and on an semi-auto 12ga. Both hold 4"-6" at 100 yards with cheap Winny slugs and mod choke tubes. As Quick said they have a solid 6" eye relief. The bullseye is awful small at 100 yard with only 2x so it takes some concentration to hold groups tight. Also we can shoot till 30 min after sunset here and that little scope gets dark fast.

Sorry for the delay in responding. 45/70 fan is correct the ones CDNN were selling were (or are?) 2.5 x 20 Simmons 8 Point Shotgun scopes. They have between 5 and 6 " of eye relief and are good solid scopes for the money and should work well on a shotgun (that's where one of mine is right now) or on a ML. If you are thinking of putting one on a 45/70 for brush work I think it should work fine also. Simmons has a great guarantee and are a solid scope for the money. Mine is mounted on a see through mount so I can either use the scope or the iron sights (point and shoot actually) if needed. Try one. I think you will be satisfied for the money, if not you can trade it here. If you can spend more get a nice 1.5-5X variable for that 45/70....<><....:)
