Powder to Use with 150 Gr Scirrocos for .280
« on: October 01, 2007, 09:59:23 AM »
A friend gave me 10 150 Grain Scirrocos to try in my .280.  I wanted to know if anybody out there uses these and if so, what powders have worked good for them?  I wanted to see how these grouped in my rifle before I went out and purchased a box of 100 for $45.  If they group good, I may purchase some and do some playing around with them.

Ah yes, these's no answers, just more questions.  What are you hunting with the bullets?  Anyway, the old tried and true 4350 (either kind, IMR or H) ain't no bad place to start.  I've killed one cow elk, several mulies, and a whole bunch of WTs with cup and core bullets.  The velocity window of the .280 lends itself well to ordinary bullets.  Nothing wrong with a little extra self confidence however.

55gr of IMR4350 should give you @2800+fps.  Sight in for dead zero at 300 yards and you can hold for the big middle anywhere under that.  You'll be about a foot low at 400 yards.
You would need to shoot your rifle/bullet combo acrost a Chrony to see if those numbers hold up and to shoot at distance to verify those drop numbers.
That said, I've never shot a deer at 300 yards and certainly never at 400 yards.
