Wish I did know. I am using Starline and having some ignition problems. I wanted to try another brand of brass, but the bag that the Win came in did not say (or I missed it).

I believe all brass of recent manufacture for the 500 S&W is made for rifle primers.  If you seat a handgun primer and it's too deep, then the case are made for rifle primers.  If you seat a rifle primer and you have to really squash it in, then they're made for handgun primers.

Some case had an "R" on the head to show they were made for rifle primers.  I don't think Winchester made these cases when they first came out so they're almost for sure for rifle primers.

Also, ignition problems are not caused by Starline brass.  It could be a weak hammer spring or a head space problem.

Something that i have noticed with Starline brass is that it has a very small flash hole , you may need to open it up just a touch to get proper primer fire .

Emailed Winchester and they advised me that Winchester brass uses large rifle primers. Thanks

Rosharb - Great, I'll try Win.

Stimpy - good point on the flash hole, but in my case 1 in 8 primers do not fire, good dent - no bang. Mostly a second try works.
I changed primers (although no problems in other guns).
The action should be fine since my other barrels (its a Handi rifle) work fine.
