Hello, can someone tell me what I have?
« on: June 02, 2007, 10:27:05 AM »

I have been looking for a used Hawken, ( I wanted something to learn on before I break in my new Lyman trade rifle. I saw this nice looking 54 Cal Hawken in a pawn shop, and bought it for 70 Bucks. The stock look great..............the barrel looks like someone sanded it and just didn't reblue it...................but it has a heavy coat of oil and no rust...........I can reblue the thing myself. The problem is the brand name.............I have never heard of it..........and can find no information on the internet. Any help you guys could give would be appriciated.

The only names on the gun are .............Armsport...........Angelo Zolie...........

Thanks

Thanks,Bernie.I guess I displayed my ignorance as to the existence of "Armsport".
I'm not afraid to own up to it when I screw up.

On second thought I'm not sure that's the gun. my gun is a hawken style...and the forend is brass. The reason i need to know what the rifle is because it doesn't indicate the rifling twist rate. I found an armsport gun that looks like mine..........but it says Investment arms armsport.................mine just says armsport Angelo Zolie ...........does anyone know the twist rate of this rifle?

Amongst the residents in my gun closet, is a very well made Zouave reproduction.  On the Barrel it says Antonio Zoli, on the trigger guard it says"  Sears, Roebuck & Company, Chicago, Ill.    along with Black powder only and Made in Italy, of course.  That gun is one of my favorite plinkers.  30 grains of powder and a 577 PRB and alot of cans have bit the dust.

You can get a pretty good idea as to the twist rate by running your cleaning jag down the barrel with a patch on it...That being said, its "traditional" styling so I would bet the twist is either 1-48 or between 1-48 and 1-66...Not many imports run 1-72 twist for a .54...Some have a funky twist like a 1-56...
If I'm reading that page right it probably has a 1-63, like the one in the picture, most of these manufactures have a set rate of twist for a given caliber...As long as its 1-48 or slower, you can get it to shoot well enough to hunt deer with...

At any rate, I'd get some .530 balls and some .015 and .020 patches, along with Goex FF or FFF and go to the range, I'd bet somewhere between 70-100 grains will give you good accuracy and have enough power for whitetails....

Rate of twist can be determined with a cleaning rod (easier if you use a rod with a handle that freely rotates.  Using a tight patch, run it all the way down.  Mark the rod with a small dot on the rod as close to the muzzle as you can get.  Pull rod out slowly until dot makes a half revolution.  Then measure the distance from the muzzle to the dot.  This will give you half the twist...  Example If dot is 12 inches from muzzle, you have a 1-24" twist.  You didn't say how long the barrel is but I will guess that its around 28", so you should have enough barrel to do this.  Has worked for me several times.  Hope this helps.

A flag of tape wrapped around the rod makes it easy to tell when the rod has rotated 180º. ;)

Antonio Zoli was an Italian arms maker of good quality.  He had a brother/cousin who started making weapons under the name of A. Zoli.  I believe that this is the person who made your black powder rifle in the late 70's or early 80's.  I have seen the rifle in Gun Digest or one of those books.  I do not remember the twist.  It was not a poor quality rifle, but in the same class as a traditions or CVA.

I believe the above is close to correct

i'm fairly new to the site an reading lots of threads as i came across this one i thought i mite add to it
yeah... i know i'm really late getting to the party but here goes anyway

in 1973 i purchased  BP rifle new, my only one till date... anyways its a tryon .50 32" barrel an set triggers imported armsport inc. miami, Antonio Zoli was the Italian arms maker as advertized at the time but on the barrel with other writting it has the name in small type pedersoli,..
barrel twist in all the .50 cal in the add back then was 62  or 66" 1" across the octagon barrel w/ double lugs holding the barrel
i bought a fancy one with nice wood an furniture, etc.  don't know whether it matters any longer.. but i thought it was worth a few words

I have been looking for a used Hawken, ( I wanted something to learn on before I break in my new Lyman trade rifle. I saw this nice looking 54 Cal Hawken in a pawn shop, and bought it for 70 Bucks. The problem is the brand name.............I have never heard of it..........and can find no information on the internet. Any help you guys could give would be appriciated.

Thanks
