Just picked up a Huntsman youth model!
« on: September 10, 2007, 10:49:41 AM »
Hello all,
I'm new here but I've been reading these posts for a long time. I have a blued/wood sidekick for a few year now, and just picked up a huntsman with 24" barrel and youth stock on it new at my local gun shop. They had two for a while and the last time I visited there was just one, so I figured I better get it for the kids and wife ;D It actually seems to be more inherently accurate than my sidekick is! Seems to love 240 gr xtps and 70 grains of APP! nice light load for the kids.  60 grains of 777 gets even better accuracy out to 100 yards. I've been thinking about mating my Harvester crush rib sabots with a cast lead bullet for an even more affordable load for the kids. I've even been thinking about going down to 180-200 grain bullet. What do you think?

welcome, first I didn't know a youth model came in 24".  My SS shoots 240 xtp's best, but would like the idea of real light bullets.

I have to agree with MD, in that I have never seen a youth model huntsman.  I would suspect that a hardcast 200ish gr. bullet will punch clean through whatever deer you are shooting at.  Just make sure that it has a wide meplat to cut a nice hole to bleed out of.  I am going to use a 260gr. cast with 80-85gr. of T7 this year, and figure that I can shoot through 2 deer with that load.  Just remember the .40-200-1000 rule, it applies to pistol hunting, but just as well for muzzleloaders, as the projectile doesn't know what launched it.  Use a .40 cal. or bigger bullet, weighing 200gr. or more, going 1000fps or faster, and with a properly constructed bullet you should have no problem killing deer within reasonable range(100yds or so), granted that is a general rule of thumb, and there is always exceptions, but it holds true alot of the time.  Hope that helps.

Update - I sighted in the youth model (which is nothing more than a 24" sidekick and a youth stock) and got pretty good results with Harvester crush rib sabots and 250 gr .45 xtp's and my 255 gr lead SWC's that I used to load in my ruger vaquero. I used 60 grains of 777.
