A little help please
« on: October 07, 2007, 12:21:59 PM »
I have an older Mod 70 action.  1972 vintage.  Can i put a magnum barrel on it?  Specifically a 7mm Rem Mag from a Win Mod 70 Classic Sporter long action.

The short answer is a qualified "yes", provided the magnum cartridge you're rebarreling for isn't too long for the long action - like a .375 H&H would be (the 7 Mag is .30-06 length & OK) - and the original boltface, etc, is of magnum size/config (a biggie).

Magnum barrels are generally heavier, due to a different, heavier/larger(read:wider) contour - usually requiring some stock inletting work, especially in the area of the barrel re-inforce (chamber).

You may also want to consider inletting & glassing-in, a hidden crossbolt, just to the rear of the recoil lug mortise - to avert any tenancy for stock splitting.

Have you considered that the bolt face recess is the wrong size for a Magnum cartridge?

Yep, it'll take bolt, extractor, barrel, inletting, and possibly feed rail work. Unless you do it yourself, you usually can buy a used magnum rifle for about the same as getting all the work done, especially if you need to buy the barrel too.

Since you specified you had a 72 vintage action the answer is yes. There are unavoidable expenses which have already been named.  Extractor, barrel(+installation) and of course a stock. The bolt face will also need opening if not a magnum. If your action is a non-magnum you might consider the 280. Handloaded it gets very close to a 7mm Mag and with a standard case head. If you want the most and hand load the Ackley version is truly amazing. I love the 7mm Rem mag and have killed a lot of animals with it. I find it accurate and easy to load. I have pretty much settled on the 160 Partition for everything up to the size of an elk and the 175 version for those..
