Max Pressure for G2's
« on: October 14, 2007, 12:54:31 AM »
Gentlemen,

Hi I'm Robert and I just found out I have the TC bug.  I am starting with a G2 Contender and will purchase barrels for the calibers I currently load for rifles I am getting rid of (can't waste brass, bullets and dies...).  My question is: what is the max pressure that a G2 setup will handle?

I will eventually get an Encore setup for those I cannot chamber in the G2.

Thanks in advance,

R.

It's not just a pressure question. It's one of thrust on the breech face. So with a .223 size case, pressure @ the range of  52-53,000 is okay. With a .30-30 size case, 42-43000 is the limit. A .45-70 is limited to about 28,000 if I remember correctly. Look at the cartridges offered by T/C or SSK for the Contender. That's the limit. '06 size, .308 size, the belted magnums require an Encore.

Ken is correct.  The pressure limit is directly related to the size of the case.  It would be easier for you to list the cartridges you currently use, since you want to get barrels for them first, and we would be able to tell you easily if it will work in a G2.

Fair enough,

For pistol calibers: 9mm, 38/357, 44 mag, 45 acp/auto-rim, 460 Rowland
For rifle calibers: 223, 30-30, 25-06, 25 Krag, 7mm Krag, 30-40 Krag, 308, 8mm Mauser, 38-55, 375 Winchester, 45-70

I am sure over time there will be more....

That TC Bug is incurable once you have it, so pull up a chair and welcome to the board.

The Contender frame will safely handle more than half of those you listed with proper loads.   9mm, 38/357, 44MAG, 45, 223, 30-30, 38-55, 375 Win and 45-70.     The Encore frame the rest (plus all the ones for the Contender as well).

I'm not "up" on the 460 Rowland.    Seems like I remember it as being something like a 45 Auto on steroids?

Of interest to you maybe would be a thread in the TC Encore and Contender Rifle forum that turned into some basics on back thrust.

Yep, the Contender will handle your pistol stuff but it won't handle your rifle choices.  You may be better off starting with the Encore since it WILL handle everything you listed.

Gentlemen,

The 460 Rowland is a 45ACP on steriods or a 45 Super if you will.  It is a simple lengthening of the chamber about 1/10".  I am starting with the G2 because I already have a 7TCU set up (dies, brass, barrel).   My desire for the G2 is to set it up first as a 17HM2(?) for the local Dum Dum shoot and also as a 22 LR and 22MAG.  This is a great site and because of much reading I think I will start with the pistol stuff then progress to rifles once I get a Encore frame.

Not sure what pressures the Rowland is running but with that case head size I'm thinking it's real borderline and likely over the line for the G2. I'd not wanna try that one in it unless pressures were kept to SAAMI max for the .44 magnum or less.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for chiming in.  Most Rowland loads generate pressure levels below the 40,000 CUP level, more typically the 34,000 ~ 38,000 range. Since the 41 mag and the 44 mag (factory chamberings) are rated at 40,000 CUP I would think it to be a good chambering.

Thoughts?

SSK used to chamber Contender barrels in 30-40 Krag. I'm not sure if they still do or not.

Sounds like the 460 Rowland is about like a 45 Win Mag (without running the numbers see what its pressure equates to in back thrust).   The 45 Win Mag is safe in the Contender frame.   If you decide you want one for your TC's, the custom barrel maker you choose can run the numbers to be sure which frame to shoot it on safely.

As long as the pressures are kept to that level I would think it likely OK in the G2 but personally wouldn't wanna go any hotter. As was said so long as it's not running higher pressures than the .45  Win. Mag it should be OK.

I looked at the thread you linked but did not find any numbers.  Is there a formula for figuring case head diameter vs. pressure that will give a number that can be referenced as within spec for the G2 frames?

Welcome!  As someone stated earlier it is an incurable disease for sure.  The 460 Rowland is supposed to generate 44 mag performance in a 1911.  That said I believe the pressures should not be as high, but we are talking about a completely sealed breech versus a 1911.  If an Encore is in your future I would begin my collection of Encore barrels with the 460 Rowland.

Just my 2 cents.  Have fun with them!
