Removing Remington 700 Front Site & New Pad
« on: June 24, 2003, 03:35:47 PM »
1)  Any tricks to removing the front site from a Rem 700?  I have taken the screw out, but can not get it off.

2)  My 700 was made in 1972 and has a slippery smooth plastic "pad" on the stock.  Anyone know where I can get a solid rubber pad to mount in it's place (not a slip on pad)?  I had a Ruger M77 with the same problem, but the manufacturer offered a new solid rubber pad.  I can't find the same from Remington.
Thanks.

I don't know about the front sight, but as for the recoil pad, I replaced all of my stock remington pads with Pachmayer Decelerator and Remington (aka Sims Vibration Labratory) R7 recoil pads.  These pads are excellent.  They noticeably reduce recoil.

Now, all of my guns have synthetic stocks.  As such, the pads on my rifles will not fit on wooden stocks.  However, I would check with both companies and see if they offer similar pads for Remingtons with wooden stocks.  If anything, you may need to do some work on the stock in order for the pad to fit perfecty.

Did you remove the front sight blade and remove the screw under that?

No, I did not.  What is the best way to remove the sight blade?  Use a flat punch?
Thanks.

Use a brass or bronze flat-nosed punch to avoid marring the sight.

If you have a clamp-type sight remover, that is even better.  You can press the sight out without damaging it.

Drive it from the left pushing it off to the right side.  alPins in guns are the same.  Right in left out!
