Lever 30-30 identity?
« on: September 21, 2007, 03:36:19 AM »
I thought this rifle was a typical store brand made by Marlin.  The guy I got it from said it was purchased sometime in the 1960's if he remembers correctly.  What has me stumped is that it has a hammer block long before Marlin started installing these(different design than current Marlins), AND the trigger stays with the lever when cocking? What the heck?

You probably have a Mossberg lever action.  They look a lot like Marlins, but the trigger is mounted to the lever. GunBroker.com has a  set of pictures of a Revelation 205 that you may want to look over to see if it is like your rifle.  Here is the url:  http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=80867065#PIC

That's it!  Can I be a pest and ask if there are any sources for parts?  I've noticed this rifle misfires on occasion, seems when the lever is fully closed, there is a small amount of rearward movement in the bolt, just enough to cause light hammer strikes.  Can't tell if the lever recess in the bolt is worn or if the lever has wear. According to what info I've found this rifle was from the 70's, not 60's as the original owner thought.

Before you start buying parts, get some good parts cleaner and clean out the bolt.  I have worked on a SMLE and a model 97 shotgun that had been oiled so much that the oil turned to varnish.  All they needed was a good cleaning and relubricating to be back  in action.  I am not familiar with the locking system, but one of the tricks on a model 86 or 92 with worn locking surfaces is to have the locking bolts chrome plated.  The plating makes up for the wear and slicks up the action at the same time.  Good luck.

Without the model number, this will get you close.
