I've never been much of a duck hunter...
« on: October 15, 2007, 06:59:43 PM »
but man is there a lot of ducks around here!!  Me and some friends got stamped out yesterday.  Going out tomorrow, and am very sure we will get quite a few ducks.

We have always been big ptarmigan and grouse hunters... so kind of let the ducks pass by... but we have been out spotting for firewood (looking for dead trees for you warmer climate types) and have seen some pretty darn big flocks.  Looks to be a good week...  Going up to Wasilla this weekend, some friends said they have been doing really good up there... so a little change of scenery should do well.

We hiked up past oracle mine yesterday, about 7 miles back and got into some good ptarmigan hunting.  Found a couple good flocks, but they were spooky, and we were on foot.. .so it was really hard to keep up with them, still got a few though.  Can't wait till there is enough snow to break out the sleds... chasing them isn't quite so hard when you have a throttle.  We did get into some knee deep snow back there though when we climbed, making it even harder to chase them.

Went scouting for the november goat hunt.  Made a trail up to where I've wanted to hunt for a while.  It's a place that most people think is "unclimbable" but there is one side that you can get up onto a ridge to climb up, we took out the machete's and got through the alders and willows up onto the ridge.  It's quite a climb, but we know that there are always goats up there.  It's just one of those hunts that takes a lot of work.  The good thing about goats is - you climb to get to them.. so packing them out is all down hill.

Five ducks this morning... three different species... thinking about getting my three more this afternoon.. .but gotta get ready to go up north... so I doubt I'll have the time for that.. Windy and rainy out, at least it is warmer than it's been.
