Peep Sight for Hornet
« on: October 07, 2007, 09:26:23 AM »
What peep sight do you'all recommend for a Hornet. I want it for close-up shots at groundhogs(~75 yards).

Thanks

I like the Williams FP sold on the H&R website. It is finger adjustable for W & E. It looks good, and is a quality piece of equipment. You may, or may not, need a different hight front sight.

The FAQ's sticky has a lot of info on sights. After putting the Williams FP{ modified with target knobs] on my Buffalo classic I put it's WGRS on my 500S&W. With the stock front firesight it is almost a red dot. With the aperture removed it gives me a nice ghost ring effect in the thick woods here in Central NH. Best wishes, Guy

Another choice is the XS sight which is a good example of a ghost ring sight. As Guy Pike stated, the Williams sights can be used as a ghost ring without the aperture in place, but it also can be used with a Twilight aperture or one of many different apertures as well as an adjustable aperture. You can also get a WGRS ghost ring aperture that replaces the threaded aperture holder.

I think that the WGRS-HR will fit the new Hornet but I am not sure if the 570W front sight is the right one to order as it is for the BC which has a larger barrel diameter. Quick do you know? I have located these at Brownells and they ship to Canuckistan.

BC barrels have a 3/8" dovetail front sight, the Hornet has a 6-48 or smaller screw mounted sight unless they've changed em. My Hornet barrel is .661" diameter at the screw hole, the sight is .450" tall.

I would go with a shorty ramp and the approapriate height firesight insert, but it doesn't appear Brownell's sells the fire sight rifle beads, just the all steel version.

You might be better off just contacting Williams, they can tell you what front sight combination would work with the WGRS, they may ship to Canada too. ;)

Mc, you asked what a "Ghost Ring" is. It is simply a large apature, when looking through it, it sort of "grays-out", or in other words, it is not very obvious or visible. Lots of folks simply do not use any inserts in the peep sight, just the large threaded ring. I think "Rife" ( or maybe "Handloader") magazine tested various openings, and found that for practical shooting, the size does not matter much, accuracy wise.  The large opening is quick to aquire, and is easy to see through in poor light. BUT, for woodchuck hunting with your Hornet, you might try different inserts, to see what works best for you, since you probably will not be taking shots at running game, or charging critters!!

Hi GatCat:

I have  been hunting ground hogs for many years and from time to time the thought occurred to me that if all the hogs in all the holes surrounding me ever decided to attack I could be in trouble. So far it has not happened but it could make for a really bad dream one night!

Thanks for the info.

 ;D :D  I know the feeling.

Something tells me your looking for old school sport with iron sights and the Hornet.  I think thats great and completely understand.  Whats wrong with the Williams Iron sights that come with it?  I thought they were kind of special on a 200 dollar gun.
