new to handgunning....almost
« on: October 03, 2007, 11:16:50 PM »
My wife just gave me the green light on a new handgun. I have not shot a handgun in years but thought it would be nice to carry along with my muzzleloader for follow up shots. I have decided on a ruger super redhawk in .454 casull. I know this round is a handfull but I figure I can handload my own light loads to get used to the recoil. Years ago I had a S&W .44mag and a S&W .357mag. I am still kicking myself for ever selling them. Does anyone use the Hornady xtp bullets in thier revolvers?

If your going to jump right into a 454 Casull, yes you want to reload for it -Factory rounds are pricey!! For light loads you can start with 250 XTP's and Unique  for around 1200fps or 45 LC cowboy loads! Unless you were shooting MAX load int the 44 Mag you were not even close to 454 Recoil!!

Here in Iowa you can carry a centerfire handgun in both shotgun seasons and our late muzzy season. I think I will start out with the 250 xtp's and see how they shoot. Thanks guys.
